ID: valida, nana or xx?

I can build a guitar that looks exactly like a fender. But if I sold it to someone claiming it was a Fender Guitar, that would be wrong, right?

That is like say all people can go by the name homosapien. We are all the same species but very different. Just like there are different versions of all acropora species. Nothing wrong with given them common names IMO and yes certain ones are more rare, beautiful and deserve a higher price tag. Its just the way it is...... I admit there is marketing going on, but that is only a play on what we as consumers want. We drive it. Although I will also admit some trickery happens as well because of the intricacies involved with such rare and sensitive species.

My point about the pearlberry is that when someone comes on and asks for an id people always try to find the closest common named coral to what it looks like and the fact is if it was in fact a pearlberry the owner would know. It would have been sold to him as that.

I suppose, if you were keeping humans as pets, and had different humans from different environments, that had different care requirements, that would be a valid arguement.

There is only one Species of Homosapien, last time I checked, any idea how many different species of Acropora there are?

There is only one homosapien and one acropora tortusa. These ARE the species so of course there is one.

My point is there are different attributes with-in the species and we give names to differentiate.

Same thing with pets.

An oregon tort is the most deep royal blue tort I have seen. It grows slow and is uniform in color from base to tip.

A cali tort tort has some green in the body, grows at a good pace and has lighter blue growth tips.

They are actually quite different and you would easily tell if put side by side.

I have no problem with people who dont want to learn or care about names....to them they are just nice corals. Some people seem to think that a name is given just to mark the price up and that might be true for some people, personally I don't care what the name is when I buy something...its the way it looks, grows etc. that is important. You could take a brown acro and call it the ultimate, crazy rainbow blast acro and I still wouldnt want it if it was free, or if they charged $100 for a frag and everyone was after it.

Oregon torts can look like Cali torts, but not vice versa. Cali torts can't get all deep blue, and will always have that yellowish/green in the stems

Thats one of the negative aspects/trends of our "hobby", IMO

The common/artificial/superficial naming, over scientific identification, to be specific

I have a rather large ORA pearlberry colony and it looks nothing like this. I also have a ORA plumb crazy colony and it looks just like this.

The Pearlberry is weird in regards to light in my experience with several of them. High up in strong lighting and it looks just like th OPs with thick branches and light colored. In lower light, mine got really thin branches and was darker and looked nothing like the shown picture. Lighting does different things with the pearlberry

I hate to bump this thread back up, but I just wanted to share a couple of photos to illustrate how light affects the Pearlberry from my previous post. First pic is the Pearlberry under lower light, giving it thin, dark branches. Second pic is a different frag from the same colony, right under the waterline under 250w halides, high light, giving it thicker and lighter colored branches. Both were from the same colony, in the same tank, just in two different spots.

Proof that using color to id a coral is not a very reliable method.

Its not a Pearlberry now,

Is a gooberberry.

You are right, using photos for ID is hard, due to variation in color, growth patterns and branch thickness depending on light, water condition, and flow.

It is a razzledazzleberry and I sell frags for $500 an inch. It very rare.
