ideas for nonfloading auto-top-off

I'm setting up a 150g tall. I want to run a line directly from the r/o unit to the sump for auto topoff. I know float valves can fail and wanted to see if anyone had an idea for a safer autotop off system that will work with a direct line from my r/o unit.

i would use a container, and a quick way to fill the container. like have the water feed piped into the bucket/ato container so you can fill it easy.

You dont want it direct from ato because of two reasons...one - failure will mean disaster...and two - you'll be short cycling your ro leading to bad water bypassing ro tank and reducing the life of di resin. Best to make ro/di in bigger batches then constant top off.

In my many years of reefing I have never seen a fool proof system. Best bet is use an ato with a safety cutoff. Then just fill the bucket once a week. If tank is in a basement and you have a drain in the floor put said container near drain and then use a float valve. If it overflows it will just go down the drain. Trust me Idid $5000 in electrical damage to my last home by my r/o system overflowing. water somehow got in the conduit and traveled back to my breaker box starting a small fire and cooking most the wiring on my first floor

Hands down the best option in my opinion, and the safest, is using a liter meter III dosing pump. Complete control with no risk......pricey, but worth every penny.

My system is having a container with a float valve. The container only contains RO/DI water and the float valve is connected to the RO/DI filter. This water is then sent into the tank on a timer with a Toms Aqua Lifter. You just have to match your evaporation rate to the timer. Pretty easy task actually. I've been doing this for over 4 years, no failures. If the float valve fails, the water will go into my stand, not into the tank. There is a water alarm in the stand.
