The problem with any kind of solution that either skims or absorbs the oil is the scale of the problem. It's just too big for any of that to make any kind of immediate impact. The real solution is capping the leak and then a whole lot of time spent cleaning up. In the end, oil eating bacteria might do the bulk of the heavy lifting.
As far as examples of human evil, this really isn't exactly a cut and dry case. Mistakes were likely made by people who didn't really comprehend the potential danger. No system of government regulation could have perfectly prevented this.
Also, I can think of plenty of worse things that humans do to each other. No one of us is an expert on what went wrong and who is to blame, that's for sure.

I see it more as collossal stupidity motivated by profit than evil. things go wrong, mistakes get made, but if we're drilling wells so deep that we don't have the technology ready to cap them if they malfunction... I mean, you don't need to be an expert on anything to see how stupid that is.

There was an accident similar to this before and the well was blown up shut. The idea is not to blow up the hole but to place an explosive in a shaft in a close proximity to the hole. Exlposion will simply force surrounding layers of rock to shift and cut off the well. Explosive will need to be a tactical nuclear device in order to shift rock layers enough to overlap (slice off) the current shaft and be compact enough to fit in a small shaft drilled by a rig. At a considerable depth underground the radiation and the explosion will do virtually no damage to the invironment.

I bet IF there is anything left alive down there they wouldn't agree that the explosion and radiation would do "virtually" no damage.

Its just a scale thing when I say virtually. Explosion contained underground will be naturally shielded and radioactive materials will safely decompose over the next 30-50 years. In the extreme worst scenario it will effect 20 mile area, few miles below the sea for a few years vs 100s of miles of coastline and desnsly polulated layers of the ocean. Even above ground test sites in Russia and Nevada are relatevly back to normal only after a few decades.

i cant believe that Obama says its BPs problem ! when haiti flooded we ran and fed millions into the country and continue to do so . we are in afghanistan spending zillions in manpower and bombs etc,etc. our military is everywhere but where they should be right now . why cant we employ our entire army .navy and marines to collect this oil as it comes to the surface . i cannot understand why we don't help ourselves but we are so fast to help everyone else in this messed up world . this country is so backwards and blind for some reason and it only proves one of my favorite points . the government is not here for us ,its here for themselves ! arrrrrrggggggg i cant believe what is happening right before our eyes and we have no power to do a thing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay im going out on a limb here but why doesnt tampex shut down and make huge "pillows " that would benifit this country in this huge oil spill clean up? the government is not responding and we get to just watch .

Its not about Obama or the government, its about the money, thats all. Obama is a puppet on a string and says whatever he is told. BILLIONS of $$ lost by BP is BILLIONS of $$ lost by government who desperately needs it. this is a prime example where money trumps reason, logic and common sense.
This is not a political discussion however and I would like to share that BP has found a way to insert a pipe in to the broken well and pump the oil BAU.
