hey guys/gals....soon ill be putting together a light system for my 55 and want to do a sump also,i got a good pump lined up cheap for when i get money for it but my problem is the sump,i only have room down there for a 10 gallon tank, anything more wont fit unless its put together,i figure a 10 gallon tank would be good enough right? beats my 400 biowheel anyways lol

a ten gallon will work provided there is enough room for your equipment and such. what do you mean "unless you put it together"? Building your own sump?

yeah, sorry,i ment making one my self from scratch,id rather just get a 10 gallon tank, put some glass baffles and thats that

so a 20 long won't fit under a 55 gallon stand? I think that would be the best bet.

also there is a guy selling custom acrylic work on ebay for way cheap and is well reviewed on other forums.. hang on let me get the link.

I am building my 10 gallon right now. It is surprisingly roomy. As long as you do not want to put a big skimmer in there, there is some good room. I imagine a 20 would be even nicer.

See my build thread at my homepage for progress so far. I have a request into glass cages for a quote on cutting the baffles.

well i can buy a 10 gallon from walmart for like 15 bucks and add glass baffles,im sure under 40 total....with 2 kids and a wife...lets see...40 bucks vs 140 also michael i hear ya,im gonna use my same skimmer aqua c remora/maxi jet 1200 so that shouldnt take up much room at all im thinking

Yeah cost if cost is a factor you can do it way cheaper yourself. I built mine for 20 bucks, I had to buy all the supplies and tools too. but not the tank.

dude, cutting glass is simple. you can do it. I used to do glass kiln artwork, cut a lot of glass, super easy just need a straight edge, a glass cutter, and the occasional high five from someone in a supportive role.

I had a friend that built his sump for fitting under his 55. It was all acrylic, and he got the acrylic sheets from a plastics company in the Nashville area. It was cheap and surprisingly easy to build, I helped him put it together. He had them do all the cutting as we didn't have access to a table saw. Don't rule out something like that if you're not happy with a 10g or if a 20 long won't fit.

Or if you have tons of extra glass, just take it to a glass shop (auto or window repair, etc) and have them cut it to your specs to use in the 10 or 20.

i suppose i could try it,i do have lots laying around and i should have a glass cutter here or there....now just getting a 10 gallon tank if anyone has one laying around :D

it would be alot easier to get to than going all the way to glasscages....about 15 miles from providence mall. if you come down hobson pike to m'boro rd (light where starwood used to be) & turn left its a few minutes from there. i got several peices cut from them & they were very inexpensive & they even polished the edges no charge :D

nightfire....www.glasscages.com would be a good resource for you since you are in dickson. they are on the section of East Piney that is over near I40 & hwy 46.....way back in the kuntry back behind the holiday inn LOL

Thx for the info. I was going to try to find a couple of local ones tomorrow and this makes it easy. It is quite a haul up to Dixon from my house. When I last went there were 4 different semi truck wrecks on the highway. Good times!

lol my wife knows these places better then me,im used to new orleans down there and humboldt and jackson up here, but i do appreciate the help :D

nightfire - I don't know how quick you are wanting to get a sump up and going, but I am getting my 140 in January and I will be breaking down my 55. If you want to wait until then I will sell you the 20 gallon sump that I am using now for cheap. I just thought I would throw that option out to you.

yeah, i just got done driving that route from my place in hickory hollow to a friend's that lives in providence & it took no time

i think when i had them cut the baffles for my 29 sump, it was (4) pieces of 1/4" about 12x12 each & i think they charged me $25-35ish

I got a quote back from Glass Cages for:

5 - 9 x 10 x 1/4 glass $ 15.00

Not sure if they meant each or for all 5... If each, seems a bit high. If for all 5, seems to low but I'll take it! I'll call your place tomorrow in the morning and see what they say. It would be nice to have the refugium up and running this week.
