If you ever wanted a trigger

Here is a pic of my newest fish I thought you might like to see.
He is a Blue Jaw/Blue Throat Trigger.

Xanthichthys auromarginatus is his technical name.

Who in the world comes up with a name like that. I cant even say it. I think they take all the letters in the alphabet put them in a box shake it up and toss them out and bingo here is his name.

Anyway, he is super cool, eats anything and has some huge teeth. Scares me a little to feed him. He eats whole silversides right out of my hand. I only let him chomp it till he gets close to my fingures then let the rest go and he wastes no time in sucking the rest in.

He is a planktonic feeder. or for those that dont know what that means, he eats things floating in the water, Anything and everything. He is the most reef safe trigger there is so most people say anyway.

This one is a male I believe. I first thought he was a female but after reading up on them the females have no blue throat and are mostly gray. The males have the blue but in evey pic ive seen
of males, they all have a lot brighter rimming to their fins. It may be a little stress disscoloring going on and he may get brighter. Not sure, only time will tell. Still very cool. He is 5" long.

nice fish ryan...but i thought you were done getting fish...lol...that 3700gallon tank is goin to be coming soon isnt it...lol

LMAO yea very soon if I keep getting fish. I realy had no intentions in getting another but I went and got a Rose Bubble tip and he was there to. The price was right so I said 1 more wont hurt. My flame angel went carpet surfing :( and It left a void that I realy wanted to fill. Im sorry he felt my tank wasnt the place to be but kinda happy. He was a good fish but I really wanted to get some clams someday and after getting him thought I really shouldnt have. So now that hes gone clams are next. Got to have live stock for the 3700 :) And thanks for posting the pic so it can be seen here..hate dropping them down to 50k and hate having to go to photobucket but what ya gona do.

I got him from aqualab, he has a post here about getting out. Had to drive 20 min north of syracuse to get him. damn near died several times on the trip up and back. Worst storm of the year and I pick that day to drive up north..glad I did though. Ill take some more shots of my tank. I need to get my tripod. Think Jerry has it still. Next time I get to Jerrys or he stops down Ill snapp some. I cant get good pics off hand. Tryed and tryed but to shaky.
The trigger pic was 1 of like 40 just to get that good a pic.
The RBTA is doing fine but not completly out yet..he is eating and extending but not picture worthy yet.. Ive wanted one for so long..

You mean u went to Syracuse and didn't stop by to see me im Hurt man!!!!!

LOL it was such a bad day to be on any road. Back roads I cant even imagine. 38 is a total SOB in the winter. Well the whole cortland area. You must love snow to live in/near Cortland. Was the worst stretch of the trip. 81 was a white out conditions just before during and for a good bit after the Cortland exits.

Awesome fish Ryan. I have trigger envy. The powder blue looks great too. the tank appears to be coming along nicely. I'll have to get my but over there to check it out in person real soon. I'll bring the tripod over when I do. Post some other tank shots when you get the chance.

Yea my PB is sweet. Huge bully in the tank but cool none the less.
My RTBA came attached to a very large piece of LR. It changed the landscape of my tank so much that new teritories are in play now and almost all my fish are scrambling trying to grab hold of a home. The PB thinks its his place to deside where the rest of the fish can be or not be. I hope the tank calms down soon and everyone finds a spot. The only one unafected is my Maroon Clown. Nobody messes with him or his space :)

And by all meens Jerry do stop down. Been a while.

I picked up a mystery wrasse last weekend from Bill as well and he is one sweet fish. The colors are amazing and he has one heck of a personality. Bill (Aqualab) has one awesome set up and it will be sorry to see him leave the hobby. All of his equipment is top of the line, so if your looking for a Christmas present for others or yourself, its worth seeing what he has left....

There is a strong learning curve with this guy !!
He is fast as a bullet. I was thawing out a silverside in the tank you know holding it to let it thaw before I gave it to the trigger. I knew where he was and had a keen eye on his hole so id see him come for it. Damn if he didnt sneek around the back of the stack and come at it totally at out my sight. Scared the hell out of me when he hit it. You would think id learn quickly not to do that.
Went to put my new clams in the tank and didnt even give him a thought. This time he got me. Took a small chunk out of my fingure. He is a must watch at all time fish. He is ok once he sees you dont have anyhting in your hand but I am so use to just grabbing a pinch of flake and swishing it in the water for a snack.
Huge no no !!! Going to get me a few times im sure before I learn to pay attention. Guess I really shouldnt be hand feeding him silverside either :)

Too Funny.. Next time he bites you get a net and grab him. Then take a nice little chunk out of him.. LOL, maybe that will teach him and you get a little snack out of it too...
