If you had a choice? Powder blue or blonde Naso?

I love the colours on the powder blue tang but I'm worried how it's an ich magnet. If you had the choice and had the tank size would you take a powder blue or blonde Naso? Which one and why

Personally, I would do a blonde Naso. Powder blues are cool looking, but I just like how the blond naso males look as they get bigger and get their tail streamers. They're also pretty chill fish and less aggressive than a lot of other tangs.

I don't know many people that have tanks large enough for a naso tang... What size tank are we talking here?

I think he's just asking the simple question of which you prefer assuming you had an adequately sized tank and why you would like one over the other.

Seems to me like he's considering a purchase of one or the other... They both require very large tanks, especially the naso. I doubt an overwhelming majority of people new to the hobby have tanks that can accommodate either fish without it ending badly, which is why I ask.

Yeah...
Personally, I wouldn't put them in anything under 300 gallons due to their massive size. However, if you do have a tank large enough to comfortably house these fish I would pick the naso.

If you're going just on looks I like the powder blue better. The naso is a little too much for me.

I think if it's about more than just looks, like which is harder to keep, or get ich easier etc. then the first thing to look at is tank size and what else is in there with it because so many things like aggression, eating habits, natural immunity etc. are exacerbated by stress. So for example, maybe a Naso is more likely to fight off ich in a 300 gallon tank than a powder blue would be, but in a 125 you might actually have an easier time with the blue since that's enough tank for it, but not the Naso. And anyway, ich is not all that hard to manage if you dot your I's and cross your T's with quarentine.

I like them both, but to be honest the powder blue tang is one of the main reasons I got into saltwater tanks. That said all these years later I do not even own one unfortunately. I went with an Achilles for my 180.

While I agree, his profile says 450 gallons.

The Naso, in my experience, adapts more easily to tank life and is less likely to become an issue as it matures. Just my two cents.

Why does every "tang" thread have to turn into a "what size tank thread" So annoying.
Anyway, I have had both, at different times, and I like them both. Very different temperament wise. The blond always seemed to get along well with all other tank mates. My powder Blue I currently have is an SOB to say the least. Pretty much runs the tank and has put all other tangs in the tank on notice. This seems to be the MO for powder Blues as well. Early on the are fine but after some time has passed they turn on the nasty.

As far as ICH, if you do the QT thing then you should be covered. I'm of the No QT sort. IMO you have just as much a chance to get ICH on either one of those tangs as you do on any other fish you get.

Oh, I forgot to give my choice. SOB or not I would go with the Powder Blue every time.

Must agree 110% with the powder blue is my favorite of the two. Spunky little things they may be; however, the coloring in general is just something I prefer over the Naso. If it honestly is only coming down to the concern of ICH chances being inflated with the PBT I don't know that I would back away from it. With the proper QTing procedures for all fish/additions there should be no concern it will cause a major issue. A lax QT though for even one fish could cause issues.

I must agree that every tang thread becomes a frustrating read because of the they need X size tank for which you can sell stadium seating to view comments they always get (exaggeration, yes, I know). I know you obviously do your research because I recognize your username; thus, the last thing I even considered bringing up is tank size needs. If the only thing holding you back is the ICH concern, all fish can come with it regardless of what it is... some just hide it very well, at least PBT scream it to you!

Because it's an important element of successful husbandry. Naso can get to be a foot long ..... determining the appropriate tank size for prospective fish seems like a good idea to me.

I tend to think of the PB (and Achilles) as an ich 'revealer' more than a magnet. Naso will get ich as well. I personally prefer the looks of the PB. For me, the blonde naso has been a difficult fish to successfully acclimate.

The Powder Blue is absolutely my favorite as far as looks go, but that is one mean nasty fish. I've never kept one myself but the two friends of mine that did ended up removing them, they were just too hostile to their other fish.

Why not both? We have a Naso (not blonde) and a PBT in our 280. Personality-wise I like the Naso better - very social fish and although he is 10-12"long is not an SOB. Our PBT is about 6-7" long and, overall, is a decent citizen but we did have to ban him to the sump when we introduced our purple tang 18 months ago but all has been well after his 3 week "timeout".

Ok, if I had to choose it would be the Naso - based primarily on personality - both are gorgeous fish IMO.
