If you were to do it all over again, what would you do?

herbie drain instead of single pipe. this sometimes makes me wake up in the middle of the night ;) also, im going to dump that sandbed with macroalgae in my fuge, it sucked up nutrients and now releases them. i will just grow frags in there.

great thread

Resist putting anything in the tank until I am sure it is the plumbing I want and the equipment I want when the tank is running.

Have enough space to operate behind the tank.

Huge stand to work with and not be a contortionist to remove plugs and equipment for maintenance.

Go with a sump and fuge this time and stop buying hob skimmers.

Research lighting more intensely and stop transitioning to LEDs and MH and T5s lol

Dip all of my corals next time.

Buy a tank when I actually have the time to enjoy it and physically take care of it, not having to rely on relatives/friends...I travel too much

+1 for no fugue. I was so sick of cleaning the refugium and really did not have any luck with chaeto, i would harvest, then sell to the LFS and then what was left would die:mad2:

I have a 42" tall

I have a 42" tall

Research yes, I've decided to go bigger, I really wanted a DSA 105 before and came right back to it. taller stand for sure, at least the tank is shallow enough that I could get close to the bottom, better with tools, my plan is a 42". Thanks.

I am setting up a 550g 42"tall I know I'll enjoy the viewing however I'm sure at some point I will curse the depth for cleaning. I would probably still buy it again though as I think the inconvenience will be worth the view.

tank is 7' long x 3' wide and 42" tall

550? Wow, my 105 is a nano compared to that.

it's 3/4" and reinforced at edges and euro braced. weighs 1000 pounds look at my profile for the build link. I am about to update it. Due to black friday sales ;) it should have water by Christmas.

What about 2 part vs a calcium reactor for a 105? i guesstimate that the total system will be about 100 gallons or so of water with sump, (what's left after displaced by rocks). What're your thoughts? Thanks.

Great Thread since I just setup my new tank here is my successes and failures.

Very happy with new tank went with 60 X 30 X 21 Lee Mar Starphire on all three sides, did a recessed Euro brace and diamond edges with black silicone. I did a external overflow running Bean Animal with 2 X 1" returns fed by a DC Waveline 10'000 pump. I went with a Bubble King 200 Double Cone with DC Red Dragon Pump. For lighting I am running a Pacific Sun Pandora 48" X 150 watt LED Hybrid. I am running a Emperor Aquatics UV Sterilizer 40 watt. I am also running a Korallin 1502 Calcium Reactor with Aquarium Plants Regulator, and a Avast K1 Kalk Stirrer for all my Alk and Calcium needs. I am running a BRS double reactor with Carbon and Rowaphos. My stand is a custom over sized with with access doors on both sides for easy access. I am running a Tunze Osomolator for my top off needs I also hired a plumber to come in and install a drain next to my tank for easy water changes ( I am hoping to install a Genesis water change system so that's the main reason for drain next to tank.) I also use a Pacific 1/2 HP Chiller for the warm summer months.

Now my failures went with a Trigger Ruby Elite for the sump, big mistake Skimmer chamber is way to tight, the Bean Animal uses 1.5" drains the sump is setup for 1" I ended up modifying sump and used refugium section for drains, and purchased external hang on Refugium lit up with a Kessil 150 6000k Amazon LED it all seems very slapped together and not at all what I envisioned.

My fix is to order a custom over sized sump designed exactly like I want from Synergy, I also plan on upgrading my Aquatronica controller to their new Touch Screen system, I have considered switching controllers, but I have so much money tied up in the Aquatronica system with 3 Power Bars, 2 PH probes 1 runs my Korallin 1502, Orp and Density, internet module, and countless hours learning how to program that it would not make sense to buy a new one.

Looks like everyone has mentioned a larger, wider taller stand. My aquarium will be in an alcove, an arch which is just shy of 6 feet wide, I wish I could have side access doors too and the drain would be so cool. Thanks

no sand more flow...

no sand more flow...

I would have left out the sand and placed the live rock at the back of the tank away from the tank to place two power heads at opposite ends facing one another to eliminate low to no flow areas in my tank.
