I'm back

Well, after taking some time away, I'm back. My tank is still running, and I finally finished my basement. Quite a ways back, I picked up a 75 gallon from Hinch. It is drilled and has an overflow, but no plumbing. I'm needing some help with getting this thing set up to flow into a sump below (I have a 20 but it isn't baffled or anything yet). My first challenge is to get bulkheads fitted and plumbing put in. When getting bulkheads, what measurement do I need? I'm assuming the diameter of each hole, but a year ago I ordered bulkheads and they were way too big. Not sure what went wrong. Anyway, what all will I need? I've heard of a Durso standpipe What's involved with that? I appreciate the help. If anyone is up for the challenge and wants to actually help with this, let me know. I've never done one and would rather not "experiment" for months trying to get it right. Looking forward to getting this piece done before building a hood, buying lighting, and making the transfer from 55 gallong into this one.

Thanks,
Jason

By the way, if Hinch is still around, he may know what size bulkheads I need???

You'll be able to fit different sizes of different types of bulkheads. Thicker/stronger bulkheads require a larger hole for the same size plumbing, so I'd suggest measuring your actual hole and looking online to see what sizes will fit at someplace like aquatic-eco.com.

If you do want help, I'd be willing. Hope those corals you got from me are doing well.

HEY!!! I have some bulk heads - I can loan them to you to see if they fit - that or go to granger supply just north of you in grimes and get some....

Great to see you back!

Savko (and other sites) list both the size of the hole and the size of the plumbing the bulkhead works with - typically the bulkhead is labeled with the size of plumbing, and you have to click on the item to get the actual hole measurement.

for instance I have SCH 80 bulkheads from Savko - and the ones that work with 1.5" plumbing need a hole that's 2 5/8". So I would measure the diameter of the holes and work backwards.

Durso Standpipes are VERY easy. You take a regular standpipe, add a T, 90 and endcap with a small hole drilled in the top. Here's a link with pics and a parts list - http://www.dursostandpipes.com/BuildYourOwn/tabid/54/Default.aspx

You could also do a stockman standpipe which takes up less space but is a slight bit more complicated.

also what return pump do you have? depending on what size plumbing you have for your drain you may need to restrict the drain or the pump until the flow matches.

Don't have a return pump yet. I'm starting this from scratch. Also, thanks for the other recommendations. I'm planning on starting this project this weekend if possible.

Ryan, Most of the corals you gave/sold me are doing well. I have too much green hair algae, but they are well. They should look great in my new tank, if I ever get it going. :)

Holes are 1.5 inch and 1.75. I'm looking on SAVKO and the only thing that fits would be their lightweight fittings. The heavier ones have 1 3/8 or a 1 5/8 hole size fitting.
Are 1.5 inch and 1.75 inch holes odd sizes for drilled holes? I realize I'm asking stupid questions, but I want to make sure I order the right stuff.

Jerome, I may take you up on borrowing your fittings to see if they fit. Grimes is a hop, skip, and a jump, so getting them there may be well worth it.

yeah let me pull them tonight when I get home from work. What I did was make a cardboard cut out and drive up to Granger sprayer specialties and match them up. The guys laughed a bit but it works!

The holes could definitely have been drilled for SCH 40 (which I'm guessing is what you/Savko mean by lightweight) and not SCH 80. SCH 80 has thicker "walls" meaning if the interior diameter of the pipe (which is how PVC is measured) is to remain constant the exterior diameter must increase.

SCH 40 bulkheads will work, but I would very careful to make sure there's no perpendicular pressure on the bulkhead, which shouldn't be a problem if these are in the bottom of the tank and you're just gonna run rigid PVC straight down to your sump and not connected to anything on the other end.

This is exactly backwards. Pipe is measured by its outside diameter, and the wall thickness is what changes between schedule 40 and 80 pipe. For instance you can use schedule 80 fittings on schedule 40 pipe and vice versa.

Been running all over. I'm now home and back at it. Going to start getting PVC put together for the durso too.

I'll call you about the bulkhead Jerome. I'm interested for sure.

Actually tubing is measure my O.D. while pipe is measure by its I.D.

Well, went to Sprayer Supply today and they didn't have a bulkhead that will fit the 1.5 inch hole in my overflow (bottom of tank). They sold me a 1 3/8 as the fitting should cover the hole. I'm worried about this not being perfect as this is the return line where there will be water pressure. Anyone know where I can get one to fit a 1.5 inch hole? Savko has them, but the ligh weight kind. Not sure if that will work, or will fail eventually not being heavy duty.
