I'm Eric and I'm addicted

Alright so my family has had a 128 and a couple 55g fw tanks since before I was born. Well I'm not sure what happened but suddenly on Christmas day, I went nuts and decided that it was time to give all my money to the LFS. I wanted SW. So I purchased a 29g biocube to mess around with for a month and do some small things with. My goal is to get a large 128g for my office no later than March 07.

I got my 29g setup yesterday got the salt and live sand in there. Today....I went and got my LR today! I have never been so excited as getting a rock. I put it in my tank and wow! I start looking at it more carefully than the 20 minutes I spent staring at rocks with the lady at the store. :) and i find feather dusters and what starts rolling out of the rock while I'm looking at it, but a micro shrimp!
My biggest question right now (other than watching the salt and such) is what light should I have on? I've got a UV light that I guess stays on all the time, a 10k light and another light which I don't know what it does, but its not nearly as bright. What should I be doing over the next few days. What is the next thing I can do? A guy at Beldt's told me that I could go get a starfish or some other minor items maybe as early as next week. Is this true?! Everything I've read says I have to wait until about 4 weeks before i'll see anything moving in my tank. My goal for this tank is 2 clowns a sea anenome some crabs and I don't know what else...any ideas? I really would like anything bright blue or bright orange.

The 128g is going in my office. Does anyone know of a really good deal on a whole setup that I can get or does someone have something for sale? I definitely want to do a reef setup in that tank. I want people to walk into my office and be wowed. I plan on starting slow though. Also I want to do a sump I think, is there any to do this that won't cost $500 for a 128g tank?

Does one LFS have better deals than another?

Can anyone tell me some idiot mistakes that newbies make that I'm about to that I don't know yet? I've read so much in the past three or four days. It's consumed me, but I'm willing to learn anything I can. I'll take any advice I can get!

Welcome, Eric! There are plenty of addicts here that are more than willing to help you with anything you may need...myself included :)

The biggest thing that I can tell you to do is BE PATIENT. I am the most impatient person on the face of the earth, and having saltwater tanks has taught me more about being patient than anything else in life. Now that you've got your sand and live rock let the tank sit for 3 weeks or so, test your parameters (nitrate, phosphate, ammonia, pH) and if all of those check out well you should be able to slowly start adding a cleanup crew (snails, hermits, etc). As far as lights go, I'd hook them up to a timer and let them run about 8 hours a day...all of them. For the next 3 weeks just sit back and stare at your tank...you'll be amazed at all of the life that is hanging around in there! Again, if you've got any questions at all, nearly everyone on this board will be more than happy to answer them for you (though we might tease you a little bit, but that's just how we are...don't take it seriously! :) )

I guess this is a bit late in asking, but is there a place in my tank that the rock should not go? I.E I have it sitting near the intake for the filter. Is this a bad idea? I just don't want to blow $65 on a rock that is now dead because all of it's life was sucked away. :)

It won't die there. Try to keep the rock away from the viewing panes so it's easier to clean. That mini shrimp is a type of pod, probably copepod. Whatever lighting is on that biocube is fine for keeping soft corals. The next 4 weeks your tank will look good, then ugly, then good again. It's just cycling.

Rock + Salt

Rock + Salt

Ok, so I think I made my first big mistake. When I put the salt into the water I meausured the salinity. It was a little high but not crazy high. (at least I thought) well I didn't check it before I put the rock in the next night. (My first mistake probably) I just wanted to get teh rock in so any of the organisms on it would get back in water ASAP.

Well last night, I checked the salinity and of course it was over 1.030, actually a little past 1.035.

My question: Did I just kill everything on my rock and in my live sand?

In my opinion, no. However, I'd do a nice big water change and get the salinity back to normal ASAP. Some people do hyposalinity for curing fish illness and stuff...not sure how high they have their salinity, but I know that it's increased. Live rock is pretty hardy and forgiving when it comes to water quality and stuff, so as long as you correct the problem ASAP it'll be ok :)

I did. As soon as I found out I did a water change about 10 gallons on the 29g tank. This got my level right back in the green. I can definiely see some worms still crawling around. So I hope I am ok.
