I'm in st. Louis

Since im here in ST. louis on business, and my girlfriend is ignoring my calls, i decided to go to a local reef store. and it was good. it was the best store i have ever been to, (never been to Dark Lord or reef depot yet). i dont know if i can post the name, but it's....... reef planet. Im really tempted to take some frags home from here. i was told by the own that i could wrap the frags (of zoa's) in wet paper and put them in my check in, anyone try it. they got this really nice green polyp birdsnest. Also would it be against the rules if i take pictures to post here? they got a really nice way of displaying fish and coral.

If you have a chance while there, check out Clayton Pet Emporium. The owner of the store is also a 1/3 owner in Walt Smith's company, so you expect a lot from them, and they deliver. I'll have to check out reef planet next time I'm home visiting the parents.

As for transporting, I've checked corals twice coming back to Chicago and have not had a problem (once from Atlanta and once from LA).

I grew up in STL and I get back there often. Where is this store? I will have to check when I am down there for Turkey Day. Also, I drive down so if I can pick up anything for you LMK. I will be down there likely the Wednesday be Thanksgiving and back on either Sat or Sun.

btw, should make clear, when I say checked, I mean I put them in bags of water, put those bags in my suitcase, and checked it. I definitely would not suggest wrapping them in a damp towel. Seems very risky to me....

I had a serious problem trying to bring a bag of water, both checked and carry on when returning from Tampa. For those who haven't traveled lately, liquid has become a problem over the past year or so. I also find it depends A LOT on the TSA guard. Some of them will just let you pull the bag out and show them that it's a coral and they'll let you go with it as a carry on, most of them will not.

The paper towel thing will actually work but the corals aren't going to be happy at all. Either way you'll need a heat pack and a small styro, but i've done it and it works... just get ready for your coral to have a rough night. :(

I have transported many a zoa in wet newspaper put in a plastic bag and they actually fare better than the ones that are floating around in water in a plastic bag getting buffeted around. Just make sure the paper is good and wet and that there is enough water so that it won't dry out during the trip.
I travel thru St.Louis a lot on my way to Arkansas. Guess I'll just have to make a stop on the wa back next time.

I've always used paper towels, never tried newspaper although I know several that do so I imagine either would be fine.

One warning with paper towels, if you see little white spots all over your coral, don't panic, it's only paper towel fragments. :)

I'm sorry :D
jajaja That's exactly what I was thinking. I stayed there for 2 weeks by Hall St. & by Kingshighway. I thought it was worst than the south side of Chicago.

I'm just about to pickup some corals I bought down here near Ft. Lauderdale and will be off to the airport in a bit. What I do is keep a little water in the bags which then go into a small cloth type thermal cooler which goes into my checked bag. Its always buffered so that it doesn't get banged around too much in the baggage. Even with my IDs I usually land up with a problem if I carry on. Just too much of a bother.

Sorry I missed the swap, I just get in too late. And it was only 5 minutes down the road. lol

If in the St. Louis area you should visit Claytons Pet emporium.

Its an Incredible store with awesome corals and frags....I go there whenever I am in town (about 4-5 times a year)

yup, and i cant take any home. between the recent swap wiping out my funds and the TSA at the airport no liquid rules,. maybe ill mail myself a frag of something.
