I got a couple decent pictures today of some river/waterfall type locations. They were my first pictures I consider successful of using a long shutter speed and moving subjects, I really like that effect.

We moved a little bit during this 2.5 second shutter speed shot, so we are a little bit blurry but it was the best we could do ;)

I like it that the water looks like fog. Would a fast shutter speed make the water look like...water?
Yep. Faster shutter speed would freeze the water in place.

It would have also made it a lot easier for my wife and I to be less blurry :)

Thanks. It is a good spot, I'm going to go back there and use my 50mm some and see if I can get it a little better. I do like the huge depth of field that my 10-22 provides though.

I really need to get an ND filter...

I also took this picture the same night, the sunset was one of the best I've seen since I got my camera.

Very inspirational! Makes me want to get out and take some pics... too bad I have no time :( And scenery like that is hard to come by around these parts...

That sunset shot is just beautiful!

Thanks guys. I wish I was better with the camera. I think I've pretty much nailed fish tank photography, but outdoors stuff is still far from perfect. That sunset was AMAZING and I feel like I didnt even come close to capturing it. The water looked so amazingly blue and the clouds were insanely pink, but I guess I needed to do some more post processing to bring that out. As it looks in the picture, the water is blue but not the deep intense blue it looked in real life.

I used my wide angle because I wanted to get the sunset plus the mountains off to the right and the city of Anchorage (which you cant really even see since it's so far away) and it of course made the background objects look so far away they arent really discernable. Next time I think I'm going to use a much longer lens and see if I can bring out some of the background.

All in all, I had a good day for photography. My wife is in her second trimester of pregnancy and we are trying to stay active so she is in good shape, it supposedly makes the labor easier so I'm trying to combine hiking around and taking walks with photography, I'm hoping I keep getting lucky and finding good subjects!

Would try shoot same photo while varying the shutter speed (0.5, 1, 1.5, & 2 sec.) to find the best balance between freezing & showing the water movement. Love the sunset, did you witness the "green flash," right as sun falls below horizon? Catching it with a still camera is very difficult.

Fantastic photos...

I saw a technique that layered two photos together of a waterfall.. the first used a slow speed for the blur, but the second used a fast-speed to catch some of the splashing water... by blending the two images it made a really neat effect of water defintion in the splashes and blurriness to give that smooth feeling...

Just throwing that compeltely random thought out cause your images made me remember it...

As said, really nice...
