i wanted to have a seperate island of rock for zoanthids. but then i learned about palytoxin, and now i'm afraid of getting them, in fear that if one of my fish nips and tears one it will kill everything :( has anyone ever had a problem like that? i wil wear gloves when working in the tank.

lol they are nothing to be afraid of just to be aware of...i dont worry about it and i frag them often...no gloves...it can irritate the skin so i would wear gloves if you dont know how you will react to them...also dont touch them with open wounds or touch your eye or something just make sure to wash...but it isnt gonna crash a tank if thats what you are talking about.

ok, whew. i was worried about tank crashing. i will wear gloves pretty much all the time. then i will keep zoanthids. i was thinking about xenia, but they can release toxins from what i hear

Ha I work at a fish store that frags all day long there is really no danger of zoas they wont mess your tank up especially if you are skimming propperly.

palytoxin can kill you if enough of it hits the blood stream. if you have a pet that drinks your tank water, it can kill them as well. palytoxin is not something that will just irritate your skin!! its the most naturally toxic substance known to man. it will not bother your tank if it is released however. zoos are not likely to cause a problem for you or any thing else. but when fragging them you should wear gloves. palytoxin poisioning is rare but has been reported in the aquarium community. heres some info on zoos for you to read. http://www.reefs.org/library/aquarium_net/0198/0198_1.html take a close look at the Interesting tidbits section it should put your mind at ease :)

I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t have skimmer and I am over run by zoos...lol and no problems. Just wash your hands and donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t touch your mouth. To be safe you should always wear gloves in your tank, especially when fraging. I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t ever use gloves in the tank although I should. It can get into a cut and into your blood.
