So a couple of weeks ago I bought a baby onyx clown as a mate for my other clown. He went missing during the first night I had him. Then yesterday I bought a melanurus wrasse and acclimated him for a while then put him in the tank. Right after I put him in the tank I fed him and he ate a lot. Then I left my house for a while and when I came home I didn't see him so I thought he went to sleep. Then when I woke up this morning I didn't see him so I checked everywhere to see if he had jumped or anything and I can't find him anywhere. What do you guys think happened? I would be fine if I found a body or something so at least I can know what happened to him. Anything would be helpful. thanks.

Sounds like a hitchhiker that preys on fish that don't have a spot in a 'nem or the like. Maybe a nocturnal crab or mantis.

Get a half-lliter wine carafe, bait it with a piece of raw shrimp, set it with the top tilted at 45 degrees against the rockwork, and leave it overnight. Neither crabs nor mantids climb glass well.

Do you think a crab could eat a BIG 2 1/2 inch fat wrasse? I have a possum wrasse and a small fairy wrasse. Why do you think they have not been eaten? I also saw a small eel like worm thing that I will see if I can get out. thanks

I stirred up the sand and dug through it with my hand. I also fed to see if he would come out to eat and he did not. Also, wouldn't he be awake yet? It's already 12:17 pm here. Thanks for the ideas guys. I will keep looking.

YES!!!!!! Thank you Rich. I kept looking in the sand and I looked in that last place I would have thought, in a layer of less than 1" of sand. I was moving through the sand when I poked something and the wrasse came out swimming hella fast. I'm so happy. thanks

For the clown - did u check the overflow? I know a few people whose fish got caught in the overflow

Well I have standpipes so the water goes straight into the sump. So I don't think he could've gotten stuck in there. Thanks though.

Wrasses like your sleep in the sand. They take a while to get adjusted your tanks lighting schedule. If the wrasse is not on the floor or in the overflow, it is sleeping. They don't like to be rousted from their sleep, just like humans.
Digging thru a sand bed also disrupts the biological processes.

I was worried I had lost him. If I knew he wasn't dead I wouldn't have gone digging through the sand.

keep an eye on the wrasse now. Digging him up when hes sleeping can cause some serious stress. Is he still eating?

I went a few days without seeing my sixline wrasse and after searching the tank for 1/2 hour i found him in the overflow

I didn't dig him up. It was more like a "nudge", and that startled him. He's still eating like a little pig. Last night I watched him dive into the sand, it was awesome.
