Attention Everyone

I have talked with Christine at the New Orleans, Aquarium of the America's.

They will take anything we can get to them as they are due to open at the end of the month and have no coral as of yet.

They can take SPS , LPS and any soft coral. They don't care. The will appreciate any and all that we can send them.

I will be flying down there in the morning.

I know this is short notice but please send anything you can. Let me know and either get your donation to Jo-Mars by 6pm today or call me at 204-8267 or 610- 9916.

Thanks
Mary

Last year the New Orleans Aquarium of America was all but destroyed when Hurricane Katirina slammed into the coast.

According to the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), the aquarium lost virtually all of its 10,000 fish...

...Before Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, officials closed the aquarium early. When the storm hit the aquarium lost power but relied on generator for keeping critical equipment operational. The aquarium also had plenty of food and freshwater, but within days of Katrina's passing the back up power supply failed, killing the facility's life support systems. Thousands of fish died due to lack of oxygen and irregular temperatures (higher temperature, less oxygen is dissolved in water and more aeration is required). The staff did its best to save as many animals as possible but the conditions of New Orleans made the final result inevitable...

I invite each and every every reef club and single individual to get together on this endeavor to help return a sense of normalcy to this facility and to fill the system with as much coral as humanly possible. We at the CVRC are sending down a small good will care package of live healthy coral. (If you wish to donate in "other ways" please contact the facility directly) This thread will deal with physical live donations only.

In the coming weeks we will be discussing the logistics of this project but unless the Aquarium decides it no longer needs our help we will be sending down a larger care pack soon.

If you wish to join us in this venture please let us know.
They don't require giant colonies and are fine with coral frags. If you wish to send a frag please make sure that all soft corals are attached and healthy (LPS ,SPS may be unattached)

For more information on how you can make a difference feel free to PM me(firefish2020), Jason(H.crispa) or Mary(mcoxx33) .

Keep this in perspective...One person sending one frag will impact little but if each member in this club alone sends at least one frag thats over 70 frags!

We will be discussing this in greater detail at the upcoming swap this month.

<b>"It is not to often that a single gesture of good will can possibly lead to the establishment of a bridge between the possible and the improbable. The CVRC is built upon the principle of saving the reefs through active propagation and education of and about the coral in our individual care. These are not simple words that we made up to attract members. It is what the club is based on and why I agreed to help found it in the first place. This is a chance for you as a member to live up to that motto, this is a chance to be part of something far bigger than yourself or this little club we started a thousand miles from the sea. I ask each and every one of you who can participate to do this for yourself, your community, this club and do it for Louisiana."</b>

Thank you all,
Ron Lanham
President CVRC

I am personally sending down Xenia umbellata, Ellongata, Anthelia, Br. Hammer, and a few mushrooms.

<b>
If you missed out on this round and want to be counted in for the next shipment please list what you are willing to send here and we will keep you updated as to what the Aquarium may need at that time..

At this point Christine (she is the person in charge of stocking the display tanks) is very appreciative of anything we can send her to go in the 600 gallon aquarium that she has ready to recieve corals.

There appears to be room in the box if anyone has anything they want to add and can get it to Nitro to me by 10:00 am Thursday morning. As my flight leaves at 11:20. The airlines said I could check the box as luggage. As long as it does not weigh more than 50 pounds.

Thanks
Mary

Just heard from Mary, the frags are in the hands of the Aquarium Manager and they were very happy to receive them. They welcome any corals we can send down to them.

More to come...

I'm in New Orleans now. I was very happy to see St. Charles Avenue seems to be in tact. It is my favorite area of the city. Very little storm damage. Other parts of the city are in pretty bad shape. When we went to eat dinner last night it seemed more restaurants were still clo, sed than were open. Roads and Streets closed every where as they work on the building to get them fixed and reopened, But Bourbon Street was going very strong last night as we drove by it. Seems to be in full swing as if nothing happened, as it is the only place in the city that stays open 24 hours a day.

Well got to go shower time to go do Graduation stuff.

My daughter graduates college tomorrow.

We will be touring the aquarium around 2 pm N.O. time and I will try and post some pics this evening or tonight.

Hey guys I took lots of pictures most of which worked but alot of them did not as I did not immediately realize the camera was not focusing well through very thick double paned glass. Things are really cool there. I will post some pictures as soon as I can but it might be after I get home due to time (actually the lack of time as we have been very busy trying to do the things we want to do in between the things the college and university has planned)

Ron if nothing else I can let you borrow my disk and you can post whatever you like.

good night all

No Im afraid they would'nt go for that.
From what I have been told they are not going to have any mention of the sponsors who helped get them back on their feet due to the fact that there were so many and they are afraid of forgetting someone down the line. So a huge blanket thank you is what we get for this, but hey that's more than most of ever get :)

Hey guys I'm home got in very very late last night due to plane delay in detroit. Anyway I will try to post some pictures this evening, Things are way cool at the aquarium walkunder tanks and what have ya. Anyway I got pictures of the corals we sent in their new temporary/permanent home. Christine said she may leave them where they are.

behind the scenes of one of the aquariums. This one is 22 feet deep. This one is taken from the top of the tank.

You can go here for more pictures some good and some not so good to down right terrible pictures. But they were taken very quickly due to limited time. And most were shot in a hurry in very bad light conditions. I did not take time to sort them I just up loaded the whole disc.

I do not know who participated in this or what all was donated, but I appreciate everything everyone has done! Especially Mary! She recognized an opportunity to hand-deliver a desparately needed shipment of corals to a national aquarium that needed help and even went so far as to beat me out of bed to bag up my contributions!

I'm sorry. The alarm did not wake me up. Thankfully Mary was dedicated enough to do so. All the frags I donated were ready to go except for the two pavona frags I had to clip off. We still have a budding relationship with the Georgia Aquarium that we will cultivate in the near future.

All that said, I feel this effort exemplifies what we are all about!!! Bigtime!!! We propogate, cultivate, educate, trade, sell, etc. the organisms that make up the glass-box obsessions we all cherish so much. The fact that we were able to help out an aquarium devastated by a hurricane (hopefully other aquarium clubs/societies have done so as well), is absolutely proof positive that we can, will, and ARE making a serious impact and achieving our mission statement!!!!!!

Who would have thought a bunch of hillbillies from WV, OH, KY, VA, and PA could accomplish what we have?????

CAN I GET A BIG "HELL YEAH"?????!!!!

Sorry Jason. But somebody had to do it, so you would not be disappointed. Besides the frags looked very happy in their new home, when I saw them on Friday. I think they would have been disappointed, if they had missed the flight. LOL

<h3>Ok guys this is how it will work:</h3>

<b>
PHASE ONE-</b>
Get a pledge from volunteers to donate at least one coral frag.
If the frag is a soft coral IT MUST BE ATTACHED in order to be sent.
Size will not matter. Please choose coral(s) that you know are healthy (multi-generational, etc), also refrain from sending any coral(s) that may be infected or infested with parasites etc... If you wish to pledge a coral for this project please post what you are willing to send on this thread. So that we do not end up sending fifty of the same frags we will log your coral(s) into a small database and will notify you as to what you should send.

<b>NOTE: We also need someone in the club to create and maintain the database or list of coral for this project as they are volunteered. </b>
<b>
PHASE 2</b>
Phase two will be the shipment phase and will be discussed in detail shortly. This phase will deal with shipment detail and funding for shipment. Personally I think we should all chip in a few dollars to cover those costs. More to come later...
<b>
PHASE 3</b>
Congratulate yourself for making a difference :)
