imisky's 30G custom system

If you could link the exact page for the 6055 mod, I'd appreciate it. I cut out the insides of mine, but I like the wider flow as well (since mine only have 24" to push water).

So heres a little update for everyone

After reading a few threads regarding people who thought they didnt have red bug getting red bugs, i decided to go to my vet to purchase a few pills of interceptor to dose it into my tank just to be on the safe side. Im in my 2nd week of the treatment and with just 1 more to go, i can say i am seeing a difference in color. Im not sure if its due to the medication, or i had red bugs? never saw them in the tank. But what interested me was upon dosing roughly 10x the recommended dosage of interceptor into my 30G, the result was a little crazy, the colors reacted the same way as if i dosed zeospur2 but with the twist that it morphed some of my SPS's colors for the better. After the dosage the colors stayed and well all i can say is i am happy about the color shift, no one ever complains about more colorful corals.

So the only thing that is new to the tank is a colony of unknown SPS that i replaced my pink millie with as it was growing too fast and shading the corals around it. and it also helped to balance the colors around the tank as it is a tealish/green coral placed on the side with most of my blue corals. So heres some photos and enjoy guys.

new SPS ( ID?please if you know the species )

imisky, WOW your tank looks amazing ive been lurking, and finally had to say that your sps tank is awesome...

also, how do you take such close clear pictures? And how do you keep them so big when you post?

Thanks,

Thanks

Very nice setup. I love clean aquariums!

Thanks guys.

silent saab - The camera i use to take all my photos is a Pentax A20, although i would love a DSLR, i dont have one at the moment but would love to get one. The cameras nowadays should all feature a manual mode, get to know this mode well as most of them allows you to set your own white balance, zoom, aperture, and etc that the DSLRs allow, just not as wide range and no raw images.

A little update

i added 2 new DIYs to my system, and i think they are both working quite well, one is a T5 suppliment addon and the second one is a DIY MCE600 cup, although the lighting system could be better but im still thinking about that part (cooling being a big factor).

So without me speaking too much here they are

T5HO suppliments:

MCE600 DIY cup with cylindrical rise:

This DIY is mostly for those who own a MCE600 (unless you are bored and just want to build one). We all know that the MCE600 is a powerful skimmer however the place that is lacks the most if the skimmer cup, after looking at some of the bigger skimmers and looking at the C&C HOB 125H i thought, hey why cant the MCE600 have a cylindrical rise as well.

So after measuring i found that biggest acrylic tube that can fit into the given area of the MCE600 cup location is 2 1/4", any bigger than that and you wont be able to fit a down tube on the lid.

the cup also has a "cone" shaped bottom instead of flat bottom to allow the bubbles to rise more easily. so far within 5 minutes it has worked great, ive never seen this skimmer produce a foam head this fast but there still much more to tweak will update as i go.

Specs:

(identical to the origional MCE600 cup)
the height is: 14cm
length: 9.7cm
width: 7.35cm

down tube: 2 1/2"
rise rube: 2 1/4"

Heres an update on how the skimmer cup is working. I like it so far, its pulling some dark stuff out for me, i still need to tweak it to see where the optimal height placement for the cup but so far so good. This is what it looked like 48 hours after using, i had to empty the cup once with dark green tea color skimmate (cup was adjusted too low).

look at the foam head

Sweet! I've been wating to make a cup just like that for my MC500. How did you make the bottom of the cup "cone" shaped?

To make the bottom a "cone" shape i cut a piece of acrylic that was 9.7cm x 7.35cm big. Thats the dimension of the original skimmer cup size from the outer edges. i then found a small shot glass that was 2" wide at the bottom, flipped it over and placed that acrylic sheet dead centre sitting on top of the flipped over shot glass. put it into one of those small ovens and once the temperature gets hot enough, it will start bending, let it bend for a little bit over the shot glass and then take it out and let it cool. Before it fully cools down and becomes hard again, take your original skimmer cup, or a premade 4 walls and make sure that it fits into the 4 walls if it doesnt bend it out a bit and let it cool.

that is quite wordy, if not i'll take a picture of the process while i work on one for a friend.

another update,

with summer coming our way i decided that i should help out my tiny little chiller and take some load off the thing. So i decided to make a DIY fan using 120mm fans(as they are usually less noisy), i looked around for parts which pushed high CFM (how much flow it pushes) with low dBA values (noise level). I ran across the GELID Silent 12TC fan, it has a temperature probe which allows the fan to either crank up in RPM or down, depending on the heat level. 750RPM at 22C and 1500RPM at 42C, these things have a 58CFM rating with a 12-25.5dBA noise level! So away i went and bought 2 of them.

I have mine running on 9V AC-> DC power supply and i cant hear anything, and it STILL pushes alot of air, i cant imagine how much air it would push if i had it running on a 12V PS.

After i got my hands on these fans i decided to make a casing for it so that it doesnt fall into my tank and kill everything, i came up with something simple which works for me to help move some air across my tank, having the heated air move away before hitting the surface of the tank it helps in cooling but not via evaportaion although there is still some as the fan gets pretty wide angles. None the less after i attached the fan i havent hear my chiller turn on yet, and it usually turns on 2-3x within an hour or so and its held my temperture at 79.5F for 3 hours now.

Heres a video showing how much air im getting across the 3ft tank, as you can tell im using toilet paper as the way of showing air movement (i couldnt think of anything else:redface:) but i think you guys can see how much air is being moved by this fan driven at 3/4 of the spec voltage. The video seemed to have picked up my tunze 6055 ramping up and down in speed, but in real life you barely hear it!, weird haha

total cost:
GELID Silent 12TC fan: $8.99
im using an old powersupply, but a new one would probably be $10-20
acrylic total cost would be roughly: $5
==================
cost: $24-34

Very cool. I was actually looking up fans to install. Can you explain how you wired them. And also what is this image? Thanks in advance.

That image there is a 2.1mm DC female power plug, it is used to connect the power supply to the fan. Simply if you didnt want to use DC connectors, you can connect the - of the power supply to the - of the fan and same for the + and it will run. With the DC connectors it makes it look alot more professional as well as ease of removing.

Looks good. Are those Chalk Bass you have in there? What are they like? I've thought about getting one or two for my tank.

The chalk bass are surprisingly peaceful fish, more so then the damsels i added in later. For this tank the 2 i had took different sides of the tank, one left one right. I dont think i would add 2 in a smaller tank though as they were chasing each other whenever they met.

That's cool. Do you have any shrimp that they bother at all. I've been tempted to get one. I think they are a cool looking fish.
