Most, if not all of the basic rules to aquarium photography can apply to a point and shoot camera. Depending on the camera, there may be some things you can't do like add an external flash, adjust the f-stop [though even in the most basic cameras, this can usually be done to some degree using the different scene modes (portrait, landscape, etc.)], etc. Things like using a tripod for slow shutter speeds, shooting straight through the glass, cleaning the glass before you shoot, turning off lights/closing curtains, etc. still apply and will greatly enhance the quality of your photos. Also, look into composition techniques. The best photographs are not really about the photographer using an amazing camera, but the moment that was captured and how the photographer crafted it within the photograph to display to the viewer.
