In defense of Maroon Clowns

I have a pair of Gold Stripe Maroons, and like many owners of these fish I have a love/hate relationship with them. Sure they're pretty... but you also read all these horror stories about them.

The big female is a PITA mainly because she attacks my hand and likes to throw sand all over the tank with her tail. Her one redeeming quality is she doesn't harass any of my other fish. I didn't realize just how "gentle" she could be with my other fish until tonight.

My pair are laying eggs right now, but their nem has shifted a little, leaving the eggs exposed. Well, I saw my female mandarin hunting on the wall above the eggs earlier tonight, and her close proximity to them (and the clowns) caught my attention. To my horror, she takes an abrupt turn and makes a bee line for those eggs. It's one of those moments - do you interfere, or wait & see what happens? I chose the latter. The mandy reaches the eggs and starts striking (yes, I felt a knot in my stomach and like I had made the wrong decision). To my astonishment, all mama clowny does is push her away with her nose. No damage whatsoever.

So, next time you hear people talking bad about Maroon Clowns... remember this story. ;)

Cool story, thanks for sharing. I was worried for the Mandarin, sounds like we're in more trouble than they are. ;-)

Well, stick your hand in the tank and your appreciation will reassert itself.

:hmm5:

Dang, we even got snorvich to venture out too...

Snorvich...I actually got some pictures of ICH cysts that fell off my new snowflake last night.

I had the snowflake and a platinum in a 5/G. Both surprisingly looked really well in the store. I was sure they had ICH, Brook, or Velvet, but this was a shocker. Get this.

I checked on them like the next morning I think and the snowflake was super super covered with ICH and hyperventilating. I've never seen a fish so covered. One flawlessly beautiful, and the next covered heavy in ICH.

Ok...so I dose Cupramine to try and relieve the fish. I works nights and came home for lunch and turned light on. Now keep in mind this tank was freshly cleaned and sterilized. Bottom is painted solid black too. So you can see any detritus on bottom of tank.

So I flipped the light on and was shocked!!! Hundreds and hundreds if ICH parasites had dropped off the fish and were on the bottom of the tank. I was thinking "holy ****!"

There were so many that my snowflake died this morning. One day with that many straight killed him. Shocker!

Check out this pic bro!

Overwhelmed!

His skin was all jacked up from the parasites eating him up.

Cool story.........

Did the mandarin eat few eggs.....???

I´m asking this just because I´m studing types of eggs to feed Mandarim fishes........like the ones used in Sushi.........

And I´m intrested if the Mandarin are searching for the eggs to eat......

This is a rare Andaman Sea footage of Golden Maroons.........in the Wild.......

She pecked at the eggs once or twice (like when they eat pods) before the clown pushed her away. Both her and the male were hovering in the vicinity (doing their mating dance) just before the lights went out. The eggs were completely gone in the morning, but that's usually what happens when the anemone shifts and leaves their eggs exposed.

1) I used Cupramine once, never again! Straight Copper Sulfate for my QT/HT tanks. A shame Aquarium Systems discontinued SeaCure.

2) Not to play should've could've would've but should've given the clownfish a formilin bath as soon as you saw it like that. Ideally you want to aerate the fornilin bath overnight prior to use, in this case i would've skipped that step.
