Intake strainer on Durso!

What does everyone think about installing the intake strainers that durso standpipes sells on your intake? Do you constantly have to keep them clean or are they the only way to go so fish and cuc can't get into your sump?

Hi I would be worried about algae clogging up the pipe and having an overflow....I have the basket to catch anything that goes down the pipe in the sump....I actually use a swimming pool basket....I had a yellow tail coris wrasse that made the tripe down the pipe into my sump....he was O.K...just fished him out of the sump and put him back in the DT

So if you would not have had the strainer it would not have killed him? Wouldn't he have been sucked into your sump or gotten stuck in the drain pipe causing it to back up?

I think the purple tilefish would haemade it down the pipe no problem...and he would have been fine swimming in the sump....as I said I had a yellow tail coris wrasse....that took a trip to the sump...he would be at least as big as a purple tile fish....by the way I have one of those as well....however, very skittish fish...I have a few tangs...and this fish just pokes its head out of a hole all day long....

I used a 6" lenght of the pererated pipe as a strainer, mainly to keep any fish out that happened to jump in the overflow

they did need to be cleaned of algea and other growths (dusters, coraline, coral etc) or the overflows slowed down

I could see where they could clog enough to create a main display overflow, so if you use them be aware of the risk and check them often

in the long run I don't think I gained anything from them
