Interesting chemical reaction

I was doing some fragging today and I came across a potentially dangerous chemical reaction. I have a 70% cotton 30% polyester, old towel that I like to use to clean up messes and dry the bottom of frags before gluing. I wiped off my cutting tool with the towel because there was some rust on it and put the towel back down on my work space. When I went to glue the frag I found the super glue bottle had dried closed so I tried to cut the tip off inside the towel so I wouldn't spill it anywhere. When I did this some of the super glued spilled out onto the towel and onto the parts where I wiped the rust away. It immediately started sizzling and smoking and would have started a nice little fire if I hadn't extinguished it.

Has anyone heard of any reactions between super glue (cyanoacrylic) and rust or certain towels?

superglue will 'insta cure' when applied to a very porous surface. It will get very hot, but not be a fire hazard. If you want to duplicate this, and feel the heat, put some fine sawdust in your hand and soak it w/wuperglue. JK don't put it in your hand. It will get quite hot. BTW, this is a great way to fill holes in wood. pack the hole with sawdust, and drip liquid superglue all over until it is soaked. A couple of seconds later and it will start smoking and cure.

If you spray superglue accelerant on, it will do the same thing. Smoke and bubble.

Yea i had a drop of glue land on my boot once and it started smoking. Burnt a hole all the way through. No flame though.

lol definitely wasnt an experiment it dropped from the bottle when i was cutting the dry glue out lol.

It was an old leather boot. melted right through it like it was nothing.
