Iodine for sps

Does anybody dose iodine with sps dominated tanks?

I used to dose iodine in my sps tank but was more for my macro not coral. Maybe they used it too.

I found a little Lugols helped coloration in my case, but was still playing with it when I pulled my tank down last year.

Most think if you dose and do regular WC's it should be fine. It is also easy to overdose.

I dose conservatively, mostly from habit. It's worth noting that it hasn't been found that SPS use any iodine. It may have other beneficial effects.

At least in my case...YES. I have suffered with pale colors on most of my corals and read up on iodine (iodide more specifically). I started to dose iodide (potassium iodide) about 2 weeks ago and in a few days time all my monti caps have really deepened in color (green, red, purple). Some of my Acroporas have deeped in color as well....while others have not. I also noticed my LPS looked really swollen the next day after the first dose...so I am guessing my tank was starving for this ion.

I dosed only 1/4 of the recommended dosage for my tank the first week and then up'd it to 1/2 of the recommended dosage (sometimes less is more..IMO).

Whether it is the potassium base or the iodide base, I have seen very impressive results so far....and I KNOW that this is the cause of the color change since this is the only thing that I have done different in my tank (except typical Mg & Ca/Alk[kalk]).

I use to dose little fron time to time till I finished the bottle. I used Tropic Marine, than Waterlife. I dont know if it made a difference but my corals use to do well. For about 10 months I have not used any iodine and the tank not looking good. Well me cant bet to say its iodine the cause but me want to try again. Will Lugols Iodine work to dose inside the tank. I got a price at the drug store R150-00 ($21) for 500mm, which is way chaeper than the iodine from the lfs.

I have noticed a minor difference, but it does help.

perhaps the bacteria in water use the Iodine, and get eaten by SPS ... .I dose pottasium Iodine flouride once in a while when my blues go pale.

im sorry i forgot the link on here but i thought that the iodine in lugols was a medical grade. since its medical grade it was supposed to make the tank sterile. another thing i read is its supposed to promote algea growth . seems odd to me but something i read.any opinions?

+1. It's due to the Potassium in Lugols.

The actual Potassium in Lugols is very little. you need a different supplement if you want to dose K.

Did not use Lugols I have used Kent tech I or Blue Life Iodine.
