Is Rid-Ich safe for coral?

I think I have a catfish with Ich. I wanted to treat the tank with Rid-Ick just in case anybody else is affected. The main ingredents are Formalin and malachite green. What I want to know is if this will harm my inverts?

Could I possibly just use half a dose?

I would advise strongly against doing this. Formalin is hard on nitrifying bacteria and will knock back your biological filter, and possibly crash it. The malachite green will stain everything in your tank green. I have no experience with toxicity to corals - but it wouldn't surprise me if either were toxic (perhaps someone else has experince with this). It's a moot point for me as there's no way I'd put it in tank with coral (live or dead). As a rule, I wouldn't put any chemicals/treaments in a reef tank. You're much better off removing the catfish and treating it in a separate treatment tank.

Rid-Ich is indeed harmfull to soft bodied inverts, i.e. corals, snails, echinoderms, etc. It is safe with crustaceans, however.

have you two used Kick ICH?

i completely disagree with you. it is reef safe bec ive used it and colleagues have used it effectively to get rid of ick. no snails, shrimps. corals have died or even regressed with its use. it would not still be on the market and relatively expensive if it was not working.

Rid-Ich (Kordon) and Kick-Ich (Ruby Reef) are two different products with different active ingredients. As far as I know, the active ingredient in Kick-Ich is a nitroimidazole compound - so you're comparing apples and oranges.

After quite a few years working in the trade I can tell you, time on the market and price points have absolutley no relationship to how well something works, only how well it's marketed
