Is there such a thing as a quiet overflow?

I need a larger HOB overflow for my tank. Is there such a thing as a QUIET overflow? The one that I have is a cheap one that was given to me, but makes an insane amount of noise...and my wife complains just about as loud. Makes for a very noisy living room. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd like to find something in the 600-900 gph range.

Thanks,
Dan

What kind do you have now? Do you have a durso or stockman standpipe on it?

Mines pretty much silent. It's just a U-tube type and I put a Durso standpipe in it.

I do not have a reef ready tank, so I can't use a standpipe...right? If this is not right can someone give me specific info on how this works?

Thanks,
Dan

Oh...the HOB overflow that I have now is just a generic one that came with the tank (I bought the tank used).

I don't have a reef ready tank either. I use a hang on the back overflow with the U-tubes in it. I built a durso and put it in the HOB overflow.

Check out this website for more details on how to do it: http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

you can also buy them there if you don't want to try making one. If you don't have much room then you could also try the stockman standpipe. There's directions on there how to build that one as well. It will drastically quiet your tank down.

My CPR overflow is virtually silent... It's the 1200GPH model, but I probably only put about 600 through it...

We also have a CPR overflow on a tank at my office and it sounds like a toilet that is permanently being flushed... Super noisy...

The main differences are

1) It's the 600GPH model and they are putting very close to 600GPH through it (possibly even more).

2) They don't have it setup correctly (they didn't install the peice of rigid airline tubing that prevents a vacum from forming in the drain pipe) and it contributes heavily to the flushing sound.

So, in a nutshell, I think just getting a large one would probably quiet it down a lot.

I had 3 overflows on my 75 ( I like lots of flow) and it was insanely loud....

I think that if you could put a durso in the overflow box it would help as that is where most of the noise comes from.

I used to use a some ridgid foam over the box cut snugly around U-Tube that it helped to quiet things a bit...

Good luck ( I just changed to a 120 with internal overflows and I can hear the TV again :-) )

Make a durso for it and you'll be amazed how much quieter it is. I can't hear mine at all. The only sound coming from my tank is a slight hum from the return pump.

Mines only a 600gph model and it's running max capacity through it as well.

Make a durso...

Make one? How? Be specific, if possible...

Thanks a ton.

Go to http://www.dursostandpipes.com/ and read up on both durso and stockmans. You can order from them or make them yourselves and they really help.

Currently I have a dual lifereef overflow around 1200 GPH and full flow going through it. Initially it sounded like a waterfall going down the pvc, but I added the stockman mods to the outside chamber and the only sound I ever hear is the water initially falling into the overflow, that's it. It really helps. I still wish I could get a RR tank and get rid of the overflow compeltely though!

It's way easy to make one. Go to that website and start clicking around and reading and you'll figure it out really easy.

If you still need help shoot me a pm and I can help you out some more. Or probably even build one for you. I assume you have a 1" bulkhead in your overflow box?

If my mom still lived in Emmetsburg I would come help you out but she moved about a year ago, but I still have some family up that way I visit every once in a while.
