Is this a Coris Wrasse?

Hi all,

I inherited this guy from a buddy of mine and haven't been able to confirm it's identity. I also haven't been able to find anything like him on search engines. Closest thing was a Coris, but they appear to be brighter orange.

He's currently about 3.5" -4" long and shows no signs of color change, yet. He's about 5yrs old that we know of, that's how long he's been in our possession.

I will say this, this guy is a trooper! He's been through so many ups and downs and always comes out 'swinging'. Aside from the initial tank transfer, a bryopsis outbreak causing extreme water parameter fluctuations and a whole slew of other things, I am EXTREMELY happy to provide him a stable environment.

I just can't find anything on his species.

So, thanks in advance!

I believe that it's a Coris sp wrasse, but I don't think it's Coris gaimard. Maybe C. formosa, or C. cuvieri.

Maybe C. formosa.

I think you might be close there. At least some search engine results came back with a few images of him/her.

However, according to LiveAquaria, if this is a Formosa, I still have a Juvie, because the adults change to blue/blue green body and get stripes across the face depending on gender.

I wonder how long it stays a juvenile? Since we've already had him for 5yrs between my buddy and I. I'll do some research on him and at the very least, it'll be fun to watch.

It's Coris formosa in adult transition, hence the in-between juvi/adult coloration.

Thanks, hunter. Looks like he's got a beautiful and potentially huge wrasse then.

Which juvenile photos look screwy?

Just a quick review, the juvi pic under cuvieri is actually formosa and the pic under formosa is actually gaimard.

Thanks for the responses!

I'll just have fun watching him grow and change.

Live Aquaria also stated a Formossa's MAX size is 2', so my guy has a long way to go.

I will say though, ever since switching my sump to a DUMP BUCKET ATS, I feed way more without worry and my fish are growing. While I do spoil them with 5-6 food feedings a day, I only do it 2-3x a week. I want them to maintain a certain sense of predatorial skills and hunt their environment for food. I realize in a confined environment, it's important to keep the natural ecosystem in tact. As much as possible anyway, lol, whenever I walk near the tank these guys DROP what they're doing and all swim near the middle to top thinking the food supply is coming. lol. I feel bad for a second, but that goes away! lol
