Came home to this white film covering half of my dragon soul. Is there something I should do?

I have no idea at all what that is, but would love to know so that if mine get hit that way I know what to do. I believe I'd frag it, and fast.

Here are the surrounding corals. Something attack it? It looks spiderweb like. Stuff sticking to it.

You could try using a small power head or a turkey baster to blow that film off.
I'm not really sure why it's like that, but you might want to move it away from that bubble coral to the left of it. I wonder if that thing reached out and stung it while you were away?

It could very well be one of the other corals, but I frequently look at the tank in the middle of the night cause that is the only time I have and I have noticed any close reaches happening. If something shot out at it, I would guess it is this guy because of the angle of slime stuff.

That looks like an acan echinata to the left of it. They are powerful stingers. I have an orange one that has taken down a few opponents. Favia's aren't weak either, but my guess is the favia and acan had a battle and the favia lost. That area will most likely continue to decline and eventually die in a few days.

I think you are right... I blew some of the film off to find dead coral. It must have happened last night or while at work. Should I take the saw and cut the good half off?

Before you do anything drastic, you might want to give the coral an Iodine dip and a little time first. Under the right conditions the tissue can grow back. Just make sure to keep it a safe distance from any other threats in the area. GL.

My sunset monti grew too close to my orange and green acan echinata and that was the exact same thing that happened. About half of the monti was covered in a fungus looking film, I blew it off to find bare skeleton. I never fragged the monti because it's encrusted on the rock and will probably just grow back over the skeleton, however I would think the favia would need to be cut as I've found these LPS don't do a great job growing back over their dead skeleton.

I just did a quick internet search and here's an echinata vs. an acan lord. Pretty obvious these guys can inflict some damage.

It's already pretty bare unfortunately. This was a nice piece too. This time could be used to try out the new drag saw. Upside?

try pulling the coral out and give it a bath in Revive (as per directions on bottle).

So I fragged the good half with my frag saw (semi enjoyable) and rinsed all pieces with revive. The bad half is pretty much coral skeleton. Worth saving or could it be bad to have in my frag tank?

Not to mention the bubble coral, which has a 6 inch reach---four inches straight up in a current.

Frag it ---cut healthy tissue 1/4" in, girdling the wound, and use a dremel or fine saw to cut the 'bone.' And wear goggles! Coral bits in the eye are in a growth environment.

My bet is the perp is the bubble coral as well. Fearsome stinging ability. Luckily the dragon soul looks like It has a healthy half left. I'd find the right safe spot on the rocks and mount it there. They grow fairly fast and encrust on the rock very well.

yup that green Acan Enchinata is a bad mother... Along with the Orange they don't play to well with other corals

I just had this same thing happen to a nice reefgen favia. I had it close on the sand to an orange acan, so I would suspect the acan as well, as there's nothing else in my tank close to the favia. Glad I found this thread, as I wasn't sure exactly what that film was last night on the favia.
