Is this an okay deal?

I'm looking to get a sump for my 40b and someone is selling theirs in the area.

It's a 30 gallon sump / refuge and also a RODI (yeah, don't have one of those yet) for $140. (i have yet to offer anything, but I want to make sure I don't go too high/low)

He also has a Reef Octopus 150 space saver skimmer and a mag drive 1200 return pump. Wouldn't that pump be overkill for a 40b and a 30g sump?

Sorry, I'm not good at pricing these things out since I've never had them before. Everything he has is 6 months old and coming off of a 125g teardown.

Both the pump and skimmer i think would be overkill for the tank. But the ro/di and sump isn't a terrible deal.

A mag 12 is big time overkill for that size tank and sump. I have that same return pump for my 220g display and 50g sump...

Ok, thanks for the input. I figured the skimmer and sump would be way overkill. I'll probably try to find a return pump that's about 600gph (because I need to push up about 5ft) - Is that about right?

I would get it, then just sell the skimmer and pump for probably close to what you paid total. Then you get get what better fits your system. Rodi is a must

Exactly. I once bought a bio cube setup (stand, tank, and led light for 80.00) just because I wanted the led. Sold the tank and stand for 100 (I think) with the old light for the nano cube I had.

You can actually have too big of a skimmer and yes that pump is too much.
The RO/DI depends on what kind it is and when were the cartridges changed last, new cartridges and or a new membrane could kill that deal.

Absolutely. Price the cartridges, DI refill, and the new membrane and you'll find that the rest of a RODI unit is worth about 20 or 30 dollars.
