Is this coral spawning ?

that is too cool... i have a fungia that has grown from spawn...but i never saw the actual spawning...given the opportunity i would collect as many of the eggs as possible and be aware of any other corals releasing a "haze of sperm" and try to suck it up with a turkey baster...then i would place some of each into a small container with rubble and allow it some time to fertilize and settle...then i would place the containers in the refugium and pray....but it seems that you already have the miracle....perhaps you can create a network of spawning coral owners that may provide sperm or eggs to those that may need it...wow.....would you ever think this hobby would lead to coral spawn banks??

Sounds like he needs some 'coral' smut. Try talking dirty to some other colonies, see if you can get them to release some sperm. I'd try something like "Yeah, your a naughty little coral, aren't you? Yeah, I'm picturing you on the fringe of the great barrier reef... the waters all warm... all flowing over you... oOoo and here comes a bunch of phytoplankton rich water... yeah the phyto are flowing all over you... yeah... you feel that hot afternoon sun.... it just drives your zooanthelae nuts... yeah... your a dirty little coral... you like that? yeah... oOo you want me to pull your polyps? you are nasty!"
See if that works.
:)

Kabboord.... LOL :lol2: you are sick.... :D ... hahahaha
I will answer your lighting questions, etc, soon... just buried under a pile of work at the moment

Fudge,
That is incredible... amazing to think that some external "timer", like maybe the moon cycle or something could affect corals in a captive reef, but it is not outside the realm of possibility IMO. Awesome looking coral, btw :)

Good thread! Very interesting stuff.

I have never seen this occur in any of my SPS so far.
Thanks for sharing.

I had a similar thing happen in my frag tank last night.

Pink stuff in the GSP.

Are those round things from the GSP?

The only other stuff in the tank is:

GSP
Xenia
Pompom xenia
Digitata
Yellow polyps
Hermit crabs
Emerald crab
Ceriths
Nassarius
Astrea
Abalone
Damsel
Chaeto
Live rock

mine that "spawned" was I believe a wild colony. But the store I bought them from also sells captive raised frags and small colonies, so I cannot be 100%, but I would lean towards wild for this one.

To answer the previous question about lighting, etc. All lights are on timers, and the actinics come on 30 mins before and go off 30 mins after the MHs. The moonlights come on 10 mins before and go off 10 mins after the actinics.

2 250 W 10K DE MHs on 10 1/2 hour cycles
2 55 W PC actinics
4 moonlights (brand unknown, or more specifically forgotten.. bought from Marine Depot).

The prop tank and display tank are connected via the 60 gal refugium (that uses reverse lighting).

Not sure if any of this played any role in the coral event or not... but thought I would share anyways.

And I know that 10+ hours of MH is considered overkill, but I jsut have not backed down the lighting cycle duration since I rearranged the lighting, but I do plan to eventually slowly reduce the lighting period.

Interesting articly Mr. Ugly.

Excerpt from the article :

"On a single day each year, just after the November full moon, corals synchronize by collectively releasing millions of gametes in an extraordinary large-scale mass-spawning event thus enhancing the survival of the next generation."

That moe or less matches the day when those that posted here noted the spawning event in their tanks, although I have not consulted the almanac or checked the moon phases on that exact night... either way it is amazingly similar to what we witnessed :)

I'm guessing that it is tied to moon phases and gravitational effects.

Been reading other articles on coral spawning. Lighting, feeding, temp etc is all over the place. No common link.

I have a quad tube pc lamp over my 10 gallon frag tank. I just turn on the lights whenever I remember sometime after I get home from work.

I could picture biological system behavior that amplifies gravitational effects, and that spawning ties into that cue.

We did not note any event this past Friday, and it wasn't the new moon either, so kudos to you :). Now, just because we didn't witness it doesn't mean it didn't happen, but we have only witnessed the one spawning event in our tank, and that with only 1 coral participating. In fact it was happen chance that we caught the last event at all as we were just about to pop off to bed when something in the tank caught our eye :). it is awesome that you have had such good luck with your corals :).

MATT_THE_FIDDLER - please correct em if I am remembering wrong, but is not the "seed" as you call it- just the egg, and it needs to be fertilized? I am willing to bet, unless you are lucky enough to have both male and female specimens of the same coral that you have the equivalent of eggs you would buy at the grocery store.. a lot of protein, but no chance of coming to life.

Thats precisely why I always try to get a "mated pair" anytime I get new coral(s).. :love1:

 - oh thats some funny stuff....

I am sort of glad my GSP doesn't do that... I banished them to the 'fuge for now.. but a spawn event would give them a foot hold back in the main tank ... it would be all out war !!! :)
