AS always the tank is looking awesome! Love the Angel... My Regal angel died last week :( Never could really get him to eat :( I feel like a bad fish parent

It happens to all of us my friend. The venustus doesnt eat much which worries me too.

Yes I had offered him

Flake
Mysis
Brine
Sponge
Squid
Cyclopeeze
Macro
Nori

To no avail :( a very shy fish always hid in the rockwork :( oh well... pretty though

try talking to him next time around, make him feel at home. don't just throw food at his face, you know fish are like human :D . oh don't forget to give him a girlfriend too  .

I would suggest adding blanched brocolli to the diet of both the Regal, (cbui) and the Venustus angel .

You want to blanch/wilt the brocolli on the stove....basically frying it until its bright green and you've weakened the fibers in it. Other methods to use are steaming it for about 10 minutes, just as if you were cooking it for youself, and/or freezing thawing several times before offering it to the fish. Weakening the fibers in the brocolli is the over all goal.

For my Red Sea Regal, I just save a couple of brocolli florets after my wife steams them for dinner, and put 'em in the freezer in a ziploc. When I want to feed the Regal, I microwave a floret for about 30 seconds and attach it to a feeding clip.

I went this route w/ my angel after having it for almost 5 months and watching it get skinnier and skinnier on a diet of mysis, brine shrimp plus, and Rod's food from Rod's Reef. The angel studiously ignored nori, Angel Formula, Formula 1 & 2....

a friend suggested I read a thread on another board regarding Marine Fish and Nutrition, where brocolli was reccomended.

I've had the Regal a year now as of next month, and she's put back on the weight and filled out.

When I first tried the broccoli, the Regal went after it aggressively. A Doliatus Rabbitfish was initially reluctant to go after broccoli and Nori, but after 3 days became just as aggressive as the Regal. At the time, the Regal and the rabbitfish were not in the same tank.

Just another option out there for you guys.

Nick

I have had good luck using (black) mussels and scallops to get Regal Angels and many other reluctant feeders (Copperband Butterflies etc.) to eat. Just split the shell in half and throw the the meaty half right in the tank. Remember to rinse seafood to remove preservatives and brine solution.

Picking is a natural behavior that needs to be replicated in captive reefs. It keeps the fish active, and away from your Favia/Favites & Fanworm collection. It's kind of like a chew toy for fish. In the 80's aquarists would cast shrimp in plaster (a much bigger version of those cheap weekend feeders) to make the fish work for their food.

If that doesn't work, you can try a sacrificial Gorgonian, Brain, Sponge or Feather Duster. I've never seen an Angel eat a sponge in captivity. Perhaps I've been using the wrong species.

Soaking prepared foods in clam juice is another good trick.

Thanks Mr. Wilson. If this doesnt work.. i will try that out. I just brought home some broccoli. He hasnt come out to eat yet from that little hole. The red brittle star was trying to take it away.

Since the existing Pyramid was doing so well, I decided to get him a brother. :)

Awesome fishes, Edward. Do they nip on the SPS or any other corals/zoo in the tank at all? I was thinking your fan worms would have trouble w/ the butterfly fishes based on my experience w/ my copperband back then..

They definitely dont act like the copperbands. BUT.. yesterday I saw one of them pick at my xenia. Im not sure if this was an accident or if he likes that coral. Im going to keep an eye on him. They havent toucned anything else in the tank.

Edward,

I remember reading something from Copps about the pyramid butterflies wiping out aptasia. So you might want to watch them on the xenia...

Thanks Simon. I dont have any aiptasia, so I cannot confirm. :)

For everyone else, I wanted to share my electricity usage as what shocked me was the pull from the Barracuda at $25/mo. You can read more details about it on my BLOG.

Yeah, but look at how little that Vortech costs you! :D

I used to have a Ampmaster 4700 on my reef, and it cost $25 a month when the rates were .09kwh. Now that we pay .14, it would have been way worse. I use a Little Giant pump that pulls half the wattage (141w) and still produces enough flow. And I have a Sequence Dart as my backup pump.

Why do you never turn off the actinics? Don't you think the corals need a little down time in a dark period?

Marc, thanks for pointing this out... I need to make a correction on the 24hrs for the T5's. That's not accurate. LOL. Thanks for saving me money. ;) As for the Vortech, you are dead on. Thats exactly how I felt when I put that in. That is the only equipment i do not own from that list, but will be ordering one soon. The reason I put it in was because my wife asked me.. "if that barracuda costs that much, what about the vortech?". Had to show her the numbers :)

I'm about to add a third VorTech to my tank. And once that is done, I may take both of my old Streams and bury them behind the rockwork if possible to create even more random flow. Assuming I can fit those back there. I may just be a VorTech guy from this point forward. :)

Marc, I bet that 3rd one is the wireless one. How do you have yours mounted? One on each side of the tank?

Here we go! This is accurate thanks to Marc. :)

I like this idea. Return on Investment for the Little Giant will pay itself off at a cost savings of $12/mo especially for the duration we keep these pumps running. Later down the road, I may end up switching it out like yourself. Good idea.

I really like how you made that chart. So tidy and clean. Was that in excel without the gridlines?

When you look at it it seems like nothing costs much, but if you actually combine the lights and fans together you get a realistic idea of what it costs to run your tank. I did this for my tank about two years ago, and it was about $80 a month without the window a/c unit. In the summer it was more like $110. Now that rates are higher, odds are I pay more. I'll have to do another survey of my gear. :)
