Issue with MP10

I have a circa 2012 MP10 that I upgraded the driver to a qd driver. After about a week with the upgraded driver, the wet side seized up and cracked the ceramic covering on the shaft. The wet side was only about 3 months old and ran fine with the old driver. I then tried an older wet side (backup, nothing wrong with it), and the complete wet side assembly will continuously spin and make a rattling noise. Before you ask, yes I know how to properly align the wet side. Glass thickness is 8mm.

Has anyone had a similar issue? Any advice? Thanks

The older models are supposed to be compatible with the new driver, though the MP10 wetside they now sell is no longer backwards compatible with the older white driver so something has changed. I too had problems with older wetsides turning slowly or even getting thrown. The ultimate solution was to buy a new one.

FWIW, I had no such issues with the QD driver upgrade on my old MP60.

FWIW, I had no such issues with the QD driver upgrade on my old MP60.

Thanks for the heads up. The wetside I recently purchased was from saltwateraquariums.com and worked fine with the old driver. It may have been and old style wetside. Is there any way to tell the difference?

sorry, my post should have said the 'MP10 dryside they now sell is no longer backwards compatible'. Observably the wetsides are the same. Wetsides do develop some looseness after a while, perhaps the new drivers exacerbate the problem.

I had to change both of my wet sides on my MP10's even though one was only a couple months old. They would rattle and decouple on startup. They would work fine if I put the old controller back on. New wet sides did fix the issue.

Contacted Ecotech and they are going to replace the wetside for free. I'll update when I get the new one in.

I asked them about the issue, and they told me that the wetside shouldn't matter.

My MP10 wet side lasted all but 4 months from new out of box. I bought a new wet side for $60 and sold it.

I now rock two Jabeo wavemakers and they have had zero issues for a year, with just as much programmability and are more powerful the the MP10s. I know this is not what you wanted to hear, I had a hard time just ditching the expensive EcoTech as well, but Jabeo is worth a look, at their prices can buy 3 or 4 for the price of one EcoTech.

I am a Jabeo fan with wavemarkers, wireless add-ons, DC-15,000 return pump, doser with 4port doser companion. All of that was equipment was the same price as a single MP10. I would buy EcoTech, very nice products but their pricing is unreasonable, that MP10 cost maybe $15 for them to manufacture with R&D added on, and they are going to charge $300.

At 4 months, it was still under warranty - probably you should have contacted ETM and they would have sent you a replacement for free.

I already spent the money, plus I hate wires in the tank. I've blown through 3 jebao return pumps in a year, one was bad out of the box, so I'm done with them.

Ya, that was the reason I went with EcoTech in the 1st place was the wires. But after it failed so quick on me, I now have the two with the single wires high and tight and you can barely see them, aesthetically take the tank from a 9 to an 8.9 in my opinion. Some folks place them all over the place and wires run from here to the kitchen and back and it looks bad, but if yu keep it all tidy and tight its not bad at all.

Anything can break. Since vortechs have been around for a while I think people seem to forget that they aren't the same tried and trued design everyone has worked on for almost an eternity. The wet and dry sides go through a ton of abuse to provide you with no wires in the tank.
