Ive got a heat issue now since I bought an MH, please help...

Ive finally bought a 150w MH for my 10g tank. Ive been noticing that my polyps (only about 10) were starting to deteriorate. Then I looked at my light and noticed that my Antinic bulb was blown but my other daylight was the only one working for like a few weeks. Im figuring maybe that is why they deteriorated (anyone else care to comment on that subject go ahead :) . But now I put my MH on lastnight, and silly me, we left to go to a funeral, and by the time we got back the MH was off and moons were on so I go and look at the temp. It was at 89 freakin degrees. I was like HOLY SH@!. So now Im not sure what to do in that small of a tank...The MH light has legs on it and is sitting above the tank. The tank has no glass on top, should I put some there? Any help/input would be greatly appreciated!

How high above the water is the light, you also might add a fan to blow across the water. If you put the glass top on it will trap the heat and make matters worse.

Don't put a glass top on it. That will make it worse. A small fan (or multiple fans) will reduce the temp as much as a few degrees. How high above the tank is the light? Is it a single ended or double ended bulb? I suggest keeping it pretty high off the water. Mine are about 12 inches.

Also, how long do you have them running? Do you have a heater in the tank?

Put a fan in the sump area. The more evaporation the better: evaporation cools.

but look out! a little evaporation in a 10g could be a lot!
i think that will drive your salinity up.

The light is about 3-4 inches above...LOL, guess I gave the fish a sunburn lastnight. Too close obviously...the light is a HQI, I have it running from around 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. And yes, I do have a heater. Unfortunately I do not have a sump. What kind of fans would I use for blowing across the water...? PC fans? how would you rig them up. Of course I want the tank to look decent, not something with wires and alot of clutter...

any ideas on what to use to put the lights up higher? I do not want to mount to the ceiling, I have the legs on it right now...

since you have a set up with legs you will need to be pretty creative....but 3-4 inches, as mentioned, is way too close

this is a very difficult sccenario, I wonder why the manufacturer even makes them with such short legs

perhaps someone has dealt with this scenario in the lighting forum

dont know, its a current usa 20" Sunpod, Im really happy with it so far..cept the height of the legs like you said...

what about putting a chiller on the tank, ive noticed several companies are now coming out with nano chillers...

What I did after getting MH's is I added a clip on fan that comes on and goes off with the MH's. And I took out the heater altogether. I originally left the heater in and set to like 75 thinking it would never come on unless there was an emergency. But it came on all the time.

You could always plumb the nano into your 90.

What's the room temperature? This has more affect than just about everything mentioned IMO. Maybe you could keep the room cooler through better ventilation or just turning down the thermostat.

eh, the 90 is not running...actually for sale :) We try to keep the place around 74-76f so I will need to keep the heater in there when the MH is not on....the late morning it was already down to 79 and I like to keep the tank from 80-82.

If they are not too far apart, I'd go with hags idea and plumb it to the 90. It would be a much more stable system.
Also, you should be able to cool faster with a fan blowing *down* on the surface of the water as opposed to blowing across the surface.

I keep my house at 70. The tank stays at 80 with no heater. If you are having heat problems already then turning down the ambient temp can only help. Although you want to be comfortable too of course.

well, I just finished making my custom brackets out of some
squares of aluminium and angled aluminium...turned out really good.
