Well ive read about it, and today after work i can finally say i have witnessed what polyp bail out looks like after the act. It must have happened in the last 24 hours, probably last night.

First, the polyp:

Now the skeleton:

Should i be concerned? The tank is running skimmerless and most of the sps has STN'd in the past month. Im in the process of upgrading this tank, and i dont really have anything important in their other than my 3 toadstools (standard, neon green, mint green).

I definatly check your nitrates and double check your heater. I recently discovered my theometer was reading wrong so my tank was running at 88. I have a skimmerless tank and one that I am changing to skimmerless, so I know it can be done. However, until the tank is really established extra water changes may need performed. Do you have macro algaes, algae scrubber, or remote deep sand bed?

I have an in tank DSB, and a fuge with a basketball size chunk of chaeto (for the tank in my sig). My trates are around 50, and the heat has been moving from 79-82 since early summer. The hottest it got was 84 about 3 weeks ago when i bumped the remote control for the heater with a top off jug.

This thread is in no way meant to discourage people from going skimmerless, i was merely stating the current state of my filtration. :)

As you can see in the lower left hand area of the bottom pic, i have a flat worm problem. This was my first REAL reef tank (aside from a 10 gallon i never spent much time on and somehow did better), so i have treated it as a learning experience and decided a month or so ago to start fresh with a new tank i am slowly building.

My main concern with this incident is that it could be a precursor for problems with my fish...?

I would check you MAG levels, sometimes they bail if it's low. Also, nitrates seem high for your tank, I agree with some water changes. I don't know how big your fuge is, but basketball size chaeto is big. when mine get that big I cut it in half and remove 1/2. that way it can have plenty of room for growth. macro growth greatly reduces nitrates.

Did you have a spike in salinity? I saw you mentioned top off jug. if you dont have an ato you could get some swings in sg.

Spikes in salinity can be devistating.

on another note, I have found that everytime I see any kind of necrosis with my corals, I can track it back to a change in dkh.

I have been keeping my mag levels high for the byropsis problem (QT....whats that?!?!). 4-5 days ago, it was around 1800. Trates are high, and i do weekly changes of about 10 gallons...i just dont have much motivation to lower them since its mostly softies now lol.

Im sure the s.g swings some amount since i only top off once a day, but i only add two or three cups so it cant be much.

Good to know about the dkh, i just ordered a RKL level 3 for my next tank...i hope to be able to track that :)

The main reason for the post is to show people a polyp bailout (i dont see that too often on here) and to double check that my fish are not in danger. Anyone know about the fish?
