Jacob's 360 Gallon Build

If there's anyone around who is proficient in working with PVC and doesn't mind being in a crawl space for an hour or two please shoot me a PM.

You should have told me while I was there.
I would have gotten my wife to do it :D

Jacob i have been know to do pretty well with PVC and i need an excuse to drive to Stockton and see your tank anyways. I play with pipes for a living. Usually a lot bigger but i have a lot of experience .

Abe, I PM'd you back.

In case you guys didn't notice I'm trying to keep my build thread on topic ;)

Update:
I finished up the duct boxes this weekend, so for those of you who saw the nice blue tape sealing the ducts to the BOL's - that is now gone :D The only thing I have left to do on the BOL's is to order the hand holds and install them. I thought I ordered them but never did. Not a big deal for now as I can man handle them, but they are large and slippery so I need to get it done sooner than later.

I'm working on completing some misc. stuff in the stand. I got the pipe entrances sealed up, the ducts sealed up, and both of the ends put on. One end has a big opening in it for the electrical panel, for now I'm going to close if off with cardboard and tape (yes, I love masking tape). After that I just need to make up, or source some special grommets to seal my electrical cord entrances then the stand will be air tight and the air exchange will be keeping it cool as well.

I also got all my Tunze cables in order and mounted all of the components so there is no more spaghetti mess. It's coming together; Phase I is almost done!

Got my "grommets" ordered... just had to think back to my beer brewing days and remembered the rubber stoppers that we used in the fermenting carboys. I'm going to use the same ones to seal up all my electrical cord entrances which are 1.5" holes drilled in the back of the stand.

My new 3-way valve also came in today, for those that had not read about it before, the one I have is leaking at the seat and is not repairable. I had to bite the bullet and buy a new one for $150. I'm also going to have to completely re-plumb the return line from the pump discharge to the tank because the new valve is different than the old one :(

The last major thing I need to do inside the house is complete the stand. I decided to texture it and paint it to match the wall. I think this will help it disappear into the room and keep the focus on the reef display.

Summer Update:

All is well with the tank. I've still got a few remnants of the algae bloom here and there but otherwise it's cleared with the help of some carbon, rowaphos, and a handful of snails. My temp has not peaked above 80 and is usually 77-79 thanks to the constant air exchange. It's also great to not have to deal with heat or humidity from the tank on these hot summer days!

All of the corals are doing well, this is a list of the corals in the display tank:

Muricea laxa gorgonian - grey
Muricea laxa gorgonian - brown
Eunicea sp gorgonian
Heliopora coerulea - "Blue Ridge Coral"
Sarcophyton sp. - "Long Polyp Toadstool"
Cespitularia sp. - "African Purple Xenia"
Xenia Elongata
Nephthea sp. - "Palau Nephthea"
Nephthea sp. - "Rich V. Nephthea 1"
Nephthea sp. - "Rich V. Nephthea 2"
Clavularia sp. - "Tricolor Clove Polyps"
Sinularia sp. - "Pulsing Sinularia"
Sinularia sp. - pink
Ricordia yuma - pink/red

My fish are coming out of QT soon and I will be doing my last round of coral QT (yes, after this no more coral will be added). Almost all of these are in the nano cube right now!

Sarcophyton sp. - "ORA Neon Green Toadstool"
Sarcophyton elegans - "Fiji Yellow Leather" (don't have yet)
Cespitularia sp. - "Blue Xenia"
Ricordia yuma - pink w/ white trim
Ricordia yuma - purple w/ green trim
Ricordia yuma - orange & purple
Ricordia yuma - pink & green
Ricordia yuma - green
Pseudopterogorgia sp gorgonian (don't have yet)
zoos - tubs blue
zoos - bam bam (don't have yet)
palys - purple death

Wow, when I make a list like that it sounds like a lot, well I guess it is really. When everything grows out the tank should be pretty packed.

On a separate note we'll be breaking down the nano probably sometime in the near future. I put a thread up here:

Here's a pic of the pink w/ white trim ric that I picked up from Twins a few days ago.

It's a pretty nice yuma. That pic is in the nano cube, not the big tank. Corals moving to QT next for about 6 weeks then into the big tank.

Thanks Bryan. Just another one of those diamonds in the ruff from Twins. As you well know there have been more than a few treasures found over there... oh and blasto's of course ;)

The real steal is the pink and red one I picked up from a guy in Oregon for $25. I'll see if I can get a shot of that one which has been in my display for a while now....

Was good seeing everyone today at the tank tour. I know my tank isn't much to look at being so young and all, but maybe the next time around it will be more interesting. I should have a few more fish and corals by then... whenever that is :)

Here's a quick shot of my new wet friends :)
(Chaetodon semilarvatus)

I have about 4 weeks of QT for the corals and will then be on the lookout for a Declivis butterfly, Naso Blonde, and Desjardini tangs (one each). For now I'm off to Twins for more California black worm and mysis shrimp!

Great setup, really liked how clean everything looked, makes me want to start a monster fish only system, now how do I convince the wife we really need another 100+ gallon tank in the living room?

Tank is coming along very nicely Jake. Every time I stop over I swear like a million questions pop up in my head about your setup. :)

On a side note, it was weird to look over at the counter top and not see the cube but a circulating fan in its place haha

Thanks guys.

I've been scarce lately.. last couple of days I've had a little down time though. I got my new bulb put in, so 'old yeller', my old 15k Iwasaki is now out of the line up and it looks much better. Now running Aquamaxx 14k 175w on the outsides and Iwasaki 15k 175w in the center. The Aquamaxx's look just like Phoenix and the Iwasaki is pure white... looks nice. One day I might like to run all Iwasaki, the blue makes the coral look nice but the fish look a little more drab under it.

My next step is to get the plumbing under house completed and get my auto top off running. It will be sort of temporary until I take on the full fledged Phase II automation, but I need it working due to some recent events I've been and will be away from home a lot.

I have some corals in QT and will be moving them into the tank in a week or two, and I may pick up a few more fish, although I'll probably have to put that off until later in the year.

Sweet! Glad you could sneak in a little tank time. How many corals are you going to have once your QT is done? Its going to be awesome once you start getting grow out!

I'm not really counting them, I only have a few in QT to add right now.
I'm in a bit of a tough spot... wanting to add some more fish, in particular one fish that I have a rare chance to buy from another reefer. There are some things going on/coming up soon that are going to make it challenging for me to care for the fish in QT so I'm on the fence as to what to do.

sort of a bummer when reefing and real life collide

That is a bummer and its hard to pass on a good opportunity but have a lot of respect that you are QTing things well and realize its a process with a lot of monitoring.
