v nice - i have seen these pics before, but are all these lights and colour tempratures neccesary to get this sort of colour?

I just noticed, but this guy doesnt have a center brace on his 200 gallon tank. Its all open on top. I do see black lining on the edges of the tank.. wonder if those are the braces?

This stuff is pretty crazy too

And I thought it was interesting to see how little rock he started out with. The tank is 5'x3'x2' Tall . Very nice size to work with. the typical 18" and 24" widths are a pain IMO.

Okay, I've noticed big colonies of dendro in a couple Japanese tanks now. Being that the dendros love high nutrient, and SPS perfer extremly low nutrient, how are they keeping those huge dendros alive?

Maybe there is a simple answer here, and I'm really stupid for asking, but it confounds me.

I'm not sure how he does it either. I think it is more about providing the Dendro's with what they eat rather than having high nutrients. Dendronepthia eat Phytoplankton from my understanding. Maybe he doses Phyto heavily. I have also heard that the Japanese get Dendro's for the color and then throw them away when they die. Well, look at this

I guess we can throw that idea out the window. Now if I could only read Japanese ............

Well, I applaud this tank owner! He's certainly done a good job with that dendro. I heard that some Japanese reef-keepers are continually restocking too, but that wouldn't be the case here. Besides, I've known plenty of unethical American reef-keepers who insist on buying dendros despite multiple deaths as well. Some things are the same the whole world round..... (sigh)

Lunchbucket.. I think its his lighting. Read about his lighting and how he uses different colors to get the color out of certain corals. He uses, 25K, 20K, 14K, Ushio Red Halogen, etc. He talks about the red Halogen really bringing out the color on some corals to balance out the spectrum. I think we can accomplish the same colors here in the U.S. if we experimint like he did. None of us have gone that far in adding so many Kelvin colors to one tank. We either choose one or the other. I am thinking about trying this out on my tank. We will see! :)

that is just CRAZY (in a Brian Fellows from SNL voice ;) ) that many different lights...dang!! i think if i had a big enough tank i would do a 65k, 10k, and 20k combo somehow. prolly 1, 1, and 2 or something

Same here! I am so inspired. I even went on Ushio's website and found lights similiar to his 110V red halogens for $10. Oh wait a sec, they werent red. Darn. Gotta keep looking. Is it possible to put a red face on a white light? I think photographers do this right? If I had a wider tank from front to back, I could add 20K's too. hmmm.. time to do some engineering work and figure this out. :)

That is incredible. Corals and colours aside, the aquascaping and cleanliness of the system is simply amazing.
