Aye, has been a rolloercoaster ride for sure. I'm on an up cycle now which is due to a general feeling of renewed energy and motivation after a period of lethargy. After a lot of frustration I finally thought about the tank objectively - what worked, what didn't, what I wanted out of it. I had to update my mindset if that makes sense. I was still in the same mindset as when I was planning the tank and if things don't go according to plan you get frustrated. So now I have the tank where I want it knowing I may never have that awesome SPS dominated reef that I originally wanted and I'm fine with that. I like the rockwork, love my fish, appreciate the coral I can keep.
I almost did get that calcium reactor during this current makeover, had all the parts selected but decided against it. I'm enjoying not spending hundreds/thousands per month on the tank. As I get older I'm more focused on saving than spending. Kids are getting older, will need more money etc. I'm taking the whole family back to the UK next year for a month and the tank will be looked after by a friend or maybe father-in-law. Anything could happen and I don't want to spend large on coral only to have it all die when I'm away. Also it's another piece of equipment to look after. I'd love to hear how people have tanks looked after when away for long periods like that.
My 9 year old son is more into the tank than my daughter but she's 10 and a bit more responsible. Maybe I'll give the feeding job to one and the VSV dosing job to the other.
The 2 Emps, BlueJaw Trigger and Bird Wrasse will probably being going in teh DT on Saturday. Salinity currently at 1.021 and DT at 1.025. Will take QT to 1.023 tomorrow and then they can just go in without any acclimatisation (as I'm removing avbout 15g per day and replacing with DT water). Be interesting to see how some of the more boisterous fish react to the new larger Emperor. The smaller Emperor can't wait to get out the 50g QT I'm sure as he gets divebombed all the time from the larger Emperor. Hopefully there will be some acceptance as the smaller one grows. It isn't phased by the hassle at all. These fish are hard as nails.
