JapanReef - 450 gallon In-Wall system

Thanks guys. :)

Still enjoying some time off from quarantine. Been thinking about rejuvenating my clean up crew as there aren't many large snails left and maybe two blue legs left.

I'm up to 17ml VSV. Unfortunately I have a Calothrix Cyano outbreak. It brushes off easy enough but I've been pretty lazy with in-tank maintenance. Today I've told myself to get in there with the scraper and clean the front and brush off this fuzzy green cyano.

PO4 was up to 1 the other day so I dosed Phosphate Control and promptly overdoed pretty badly (20ml instead of 12.5ml). No adverse effects though. I've started to strain the frozen food before adding it as that is where the PO4 must be coming from.

I'm officially calling the Bird Wrasse MIA. I used to see under some rocks and it was moving. Haven't seen for a few days. My Juvie Emperor is also MIA. Haven't seen it for a few days so maybe the bigger Emp killed it. I haven't written off either fish yet though.

Clownfish spawning regularly now - every 2 weeks. Cardinals too.

Been a month without an update so thought I'd post something.

I'm still on lazy mode. :)

The Juvie Emperor definitely didn't make it. I also had written off the Bird Wrasse as I didn't see it for SIX WEEKS. This is a pretty big fish so after I didn't see it for so long I was sure it was dead. Then about 10 days ago I turned my head and saw it swim out, do a circuit and dive in the rocks again. Since then I've seen it briefly 2 times but I can't get a decent look at it as as soon as I get close to the tank it is gone. From what I can gather from a few glimpses it doesn't look great (it's a bit pale) but at least it's starting to venture out. I hope one day it joins the other fish in the community.

Fastest growing fish award has to go to the Niger Trigger. This fish eats anything and lots of it.

Blueline and Emperor get on just fine. :)

Last month I was also missing the smaller Rabbitfish for a week and feared the worse. Then I saw it mottled and stressed but it started coming out again and now is swimming free again. I guess it had a fight with something and stayed low for a while.

Clarkiis spawning regular as clockwork. Bangaiis about once a month. No new babies though. Also I think I'm down one baby as I only see 3 these days but that was to be expected. The babies aren't really babies anymore though. :)

Calothrix Cyano big problem but it does brush off easily. It's just hardwork with the toothbrush and the female Clarkii does love to bite. :D

But I continue to dose VSV. Holding it at 40ml per day at the moment. Nitrates hold around 4 or 5 and PO4 creeps up sometimes.

Going to Oz again next month (yay) and will start stocking again after I get back on teh 25th. Will start on the 7 Grammas then the Regal Angel pair then who knows, maybe a trio of something. :D

Bi-monthly update. :D

Still see the Bird Wrasse every now and then. I heard this was an agressive fish so I hope it mans up.

BlueThroat trigger is MIA for 3-4 weeks so prolly the Niger finally did it in. Shame as I do like the trigs. Think I'll hang out for a large Crosshatch pair sometime in the future.

My overflows and sump are awash with baby fish. I have no idea if they are Bangais or Clarkiis. I powdered up some flake and pellet and have been sprinkling it in the overflows and 3 sections of sump. If they are baby clowns then they are sure to die off but if they are Bangais I have high hopes that some will make it as I have 3 surviving offspring in the DT now - oldest is a year old now.

The Calothrix outbreak subsided and is gone now. Looked really horrible at one point.

So it's time to try that harem of Royal Grammas. Going to go for lucky 7. I am positive this fish is sensitive to hypo so I want to try Cupramine. First question is shelf life. How long does it last? Because my bottle could be 3 years old.

Directions say to dose 1ml then dose another 1ml 48 hours and leave for 2 weeks. During this time should I not change the water? Kind of worried about keeping water quality within acceptable levels without a WC for 2 weeks. Do must people do this twice and if so what is the dosage on weeks 3-4 (as there will be Cupramine in the system still). Or maybe do a 75% water change and dose 2ml 48 hours apart again?

This year I'll also be doing a Regal Angel pair and a trio of some kind of wrasse (Mystery I hope). Will probably boost the harem of Lyretails by adding another 5. Would like to add another tang, blond Naso I think, then the Crosshatch pair and the final Clown Tang and I think I'll be done. :)

Lawrence.

Good to see you again. 6 months until I hit Tokyo again and boy am I counting......

Delhi is not exactly a hot spot for reefers!

Hey Matt, wondered if we'd ever you again. Thought maybe Delhi would have swallowed you up. :D

You back for another long stint? Typical 3 year jaunt?

Sorry Laurence, was trying to correct mistyping your name but didn't seem to have worked.

4 and a half years this time. Will be spending as much time in Okinawa as I can.

I've been trying to put aside a few hours this week to do some hardcore maintenance. Front hasn't been cleaned in a month, sand need mixing up and a bit replaced, back and sides need scraping, Tunzes and pumps need a good vinegar soak etc. My camera also got stolen somewhere in between Oz and Japan - probably in Singapore - by baggage handlers. I wasn't allowed to take on 3 pieces of hand luggage so the rucksack went in and of course it had no locks and teh camera was just in the front pocket. However, my wife just won a HandyCam on some competition so I'll fire that up and take some shots after I've cleaned it and take some vid. But nothing much has changed, enjoying the status quo at the moment. Haven't added any corals and probably won't unless Matt tells me how to get CO2 in Japan and then maybe I'll finally by a reactor. :D

I would if I knew how to make the cheap 2 Part but again, have no idea how to buy the ingredients. :(

BlueLine is still healthy as ever. Will take some pics as soon as I clean up.

Good to hear everything is doing well! I have been the same way with my tank and just did a large water change and tank cleaning on my 240g cube. There is an achilles tang that I have my eye on.

Natural mate. You can get the cylinder from them, it comes with a one year guarantee and is pressure tested and then filled. Thats where I got mine and will do again. THey also sell pressure gauges. Bottles are available in all sizes but are steep. Don't forget that screw threads are the different way in UK/US compared to Japan, so I bought everything in Japan.

So when it empties I send it back to them for a refill? Was thinking about getting the whole thing from a US retailer (including Co2 tank) but if they can't fill the Co2 here I guess there's no point.

So, there's really no use for CO2 in Japan and it's just not available?

How do the McD's serve up a fountain soda? :fish1:

Too funny! :)
Bet there's CO2 in Tokyo!
I guess it's the price you pay for living on the south end of paradise!
