Jawfish, which one and tankmates

I know you're somewhat of a celebrity around these parts,
Surely you jest.
and with good cause from what I've seen/read of your system and success. Still, I think your response is pretty bit*hy, both here and above. Not sure if it's an ego-trip or simply you're having a bad-day.
I'm going through a tough time, lately I have a "bad" day most days. I've been caring for my dying mother for 2 and a half years. I have noticed my responses are rather terse lately and have been trying to tone it down. The bluespot jawfish issue is something I've been concerned with for years and my patience bucket on the subject is full.

I cannot "somehow defend the 5 fish" but I can EXPLAIN and CLARIFY what happened.

First fish - Mine - Jumped out of the badly disigned lid I had.
Second Fish - was dying in the store, recended stomach - i bought it for 20$ and tried to bring it back. Died after 2 weeks, it never ate without regurgitating. I even tried target feeding and pretty near hand-feeding this guy to help him out. Just was too far gone by the time I found him.
Third Fish - Alive and well in my current system (2months to date)

Fourth Fish - In other Hobbiest system - Jumped and bounced into the overflow off of the glass cover.
Fifth Fish - In other Hobbiest System - Alive and well in his system (5months to date)

So you're 2 out of 5? That is surprisingly good. That's not what your post sounded like to me, but I have to admit that I did jump at you unfairly. That's encouraging that only the one died of the "bsj disease". They do need a very quiet tank, btw.

Other referenced fish - all rumored from local club and other casual acquaintance.... the # 1 cause of death seems to be jumping and closely followed by "he never ate"... which could be shipping and collection, i'm not sure.

Not sure if you have any other questions.
Will you accept my aplogy?

My info on the Blue spot comes from Mr Fenner and the folks at www.wetwebmedia.com also.

Hookup - just so you are aware - 5 months is not "success" Let me know how things are in a few years. I am far from an expert, but I have had marine systems in operation since the mid 1980's. My newest addition is ~ 5 years old now, my oldest is about 25. YEARS old.

I certainly will not argue that the most often cited reson for the loss of a jawfish (most fish, really) is carpet surfing. That is something that can so easily be prevented that it really should not occur as often as it does.

That's my source also. And if you look at the water temp maps and the fishbase.org siting locations, it confirms the colder water.

You see a lot of people saying, 'well I've seen them in the wild and the water temp was very high, but I wonder if they really paid that much attention to the temp and if they ever went during the winter.

Cooler temps can be easier on a fish, a long as it is in good range. It sure seems possible that summer is more of a stress for them than winter. Personally, I don't believe they should be collected, regardless of the cause, too many die.

Will you accept my aplogy?

humbly, I accept and thanks for offering. However, I should have been much clearer in what I said in the offending post. I can now see how it could read that I've killed 5 of these thru careless experimentation/mad-science.

So we move on. :)

@billdogg;
Yes, the first goal is to have first hand experience with them for one year, but to be truly successful I think that it would be 3+. Not sure but it's years not months. :)

OK, anyway we can get back to the topic...tiger jawfish or yellow head jawfish...NOT blue spot Jawfish? I appreciate any similarities in keeping, but, I think this has devolved down into a BSJ debate. It is interesting, and, I am learning quite a bit about BSJ, but, I was never interested in keeping them, so, any more info on non-BSJ? ;)

Yellow head jawfish are great to keep but they ARE great jumpers. I have no experience with the other one, just pictures.

Thanks, Steve! I have already bought the kit to make the screen top using the 1/4" plastic mesh and will maker sure all openings for equiptment are also covered. I plan to make a cover for my overflow using the screen, too, to keep fish out of the drain box. I am really looking foreward to keeping a jawfish or pair of jawfish in this tank. :)

Smaller jawfish? Yeah, aside from being more adaptable, they would be less likely to view small fish as a snack, especially if I do get the redspot cardinals. Probably won't matter with the orange lined unless they come in especially small. :)

Thanks, Hookup :)

I just meant the yellow head over the tiger. If those are the itty bitty cardinals, I would consider it too risky.
