JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Just ordered an aquamaxx hob-1 and two of the Two Little Fishies PhosBan Reactor 150. Looking to run a similar set up like yours. What type of pump are you using for the Two Little Fishies PhosBan Reactors? Sorry if this was already mentioned but I didn't see this.

Eheim Compact600 is the way to go. Same price as a MaxiJet but far superior in every way.

Has anybody used a Octopus BH 100 on the JBJ? I ordered the aquamax but it is on back order for a month. :( The owner of the store is trying to push this skimmer on me.

I use the bh1000 which is better because the motor is external. Fits perfectly on either side if the media basket chamber.

Have you looked around online? I almost went with the Octopus BH 1000 for the same reason but I'm glad I didn't go that route.

You may also want to look around for the JNS VS1 which is the Aquamaxx HOB-1 just without the Aquamaxx sticker on it. It's the same skimmer from the same factory. That's what I ended up going with once I learned about it because I wasn't able to find the HOB-1 in stock either. I love this skimmer and once I swap to the Solana Superbrite 34 it's going in the sump. No need to go with a bulky cone skimmer when this thing skims so well.

Thanks! I found a great deal on a new one for $159.99. (slight scratch on acrylic but doesn't bother me). Also ordered 2 X Two little fishies 150 and a tunze universal pump mini since they did not have an eheim compact 600.

Got a pair of Eheim Compact 1000's in finally to replace the stock Accela's. Even though they are rated lower flow, they are definitely putting out more as my media basket is now overflowing even with brand new floss. Going to have to crank one of em down (good thing they are adjustable). Fit is perfect though, and the 1/2" ID Lee's pond tubing that my tank is rigged up with fit over the 5/8" pump outlets with just a little soak in some boiling water.

Thanks for the tips chad and crew!

No worries, now I only owe you 543 good tips and we'll be even!

I noticed the higher flow too. It seems to put out quite a bit more than my stock pump but the 2 of them together work like a charm.

Got trouble with cycling my tank. I am cycling it for almost a month now. Just got confused with my readings for this last week. I've read that when you're cycling, ammonia goes up then down, then nitrite goes high then down then the nitrates goes up then down, that is when you know your done cycling...

My results are confusing though.

When I first started cycling both my ammonia and nitrite went to 1ppm in just one week, then I added sand to my bare bottom tank then the result for the next week was ammonia 0.8ppm then 0.6ppm for nitrite then nitrate has been going 5-10ppm respectively. These past two weeks my results are nitrite- 0 then ammonia has been stucked in 0.25 ppm and nitrate is 10ppm.

I don't get it, is my tank recyling?

Ange,

Can you remove the In tank basket without having to remove the hob-1? just wondering because mine is blocked by it and it gets annoying having to shutoff the skimmer and move it every time.

Thanks

Yeah, your tank is still cycling. Did you add live rock already? Its probably faster if you add both the live rock and sand at the same time so you don't have keep going thru mini cycles. Just have to wait it out. You will probably get more answers if you post at the "new to hobby" forum.

sounds like an awesome setup for the cube. great choices on the equipments. :)

thanks for the feedback. is this what i should buy? what media should i put in it?

should also get a fuge? i also bought the jbj led nano glo light just in case.

That's the ticket. I run one with about 8 tbs. of BRS GFO and 4 tbs. of carbon although most would prefer one reactor for each media. I use an Eheim compact 300 pump for it and if you ran 2 reactors a 600 does the trick.

I wouldn't do a fuge personally. Headaches and time outweigh the possible benefits on such a small tank. With the Aquamaxx and reactors along with a quality RO/DI nutrients shouldn't be an issue in the long run.

Yep, that's it! You also need a few feet of black 1/2" ID hose, and a pump to run the reactor(s). I recommend an Eheim Compact 600, great little pump! I use BRS High-Capacity GFO and BRS ROX0.8 Carbon and like them both. I also use TLF Phosban and really like it (in place of the BRS GFO).

Nope, you have to lift the skimmer off the tank. How often do you remove the InTank basket though? I only pull mine out once every 4-5mo or so to clean it so it's really not even an issue.

My skimmer came in today and this thing is a beast for the size. I had to cut off some of the intake and output so the lid will open. I'm getting some micro bubbles in the display. Took out the media basket and I am thinking about moving the skimmer to the middle section if I can fit the 2 TLF reactors.

Did anybody have to glue the elbows in the in take and return with pvc cement? I noticed a small drip after running the skimmer for a few hours.

I had a slight leak too. Only it was worse than I thought and it dripped down the power lines into my cabinet overnight and made a mess. :(

I had to wrap the return/skimmer junction with leak-fixing stretch tape, similar to this. It work very well and I haven't had any issue since.

Ange,

Not anymore. I just changed the In-tank basket layout. Floss pad on top, Chaeto in the middle and ChemiPure Elite and Purigen at the bottom. Had an extra pad in the chaeto chamber to keep it from escaping into the main tank but I found out that Chaeto doesn't attach so I can just pick it out if I see it floating around.

On a side note, I put both back pumps (MJ-1200's) on simultaneously today instead of alternating. I had to move the basket back against the glass because it was overflowing and sucking the water level way down when I had it up against the display side. Is this going to cause problems? Possibly with the ATO maybe? I'm a little worried if the pad gets dirty and causes the water level to drop or will it not do that when moved way back? Suggestions?

Thanks
