JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I cleaned out my back chamber last week, soaked my pumps in a mild vinegar bath to clean them. Guess I didn't rinse them well enough, cause when I put them pack in I had BIG pH crash. Any chance something like that happened to you?

I didn't use vinegar or anything like that, just cleaned the equipment with regular water and sucked out all the poo from the back.

Ok.. I am getting ready to order my 28G HQI. This will be my first sw tank, and I have a water question. I work for Pepsi, and we take city water, and run it through a massive RO system. It does not have DI, so my question is would it be ok for a reef tank? The final product is filtered to 1 micron, and has a TDS of 2. With the limited amt. of evap, I would rather not mess with a RO/DI at home if I do not have to.

Whats everyones thoughts?

Well, I guess you could give it a try and see how it works for you. IME though, you will be much better off buying your own system.

I am sitting here thinking for 150 bucks more I can get the LEDs.... I have read alot of good things about them, but nothing for the negative. Anyone have any complaints. I could save the 150 bucks pretty quick with just the power consumption and bulb cost. What would you do?

leds all the way!!! if not stock, then a retro fit so you can have more of a choice in what type of led set up you want.

i have one with the hqi lighting and im actually thinking about retrofitting one of the led pads and loosing the halide all together
we have it sitting side by side with a 150w halide and the leds are kicking its butt...not to mention the dimming and storm funstions

Here's a recent picture I took with my iphone.

I am still not completely on board with leds. I know theres a big debate on their par rating compared to halide, but from what I have read halides are still better for growth. Although, for a while, I was debating on switching over :).. who knows

Anyone know what the actual model numbers or style numbers are for the MH bulbs? I want to replace, but don't know which is the style I should get. And what color?

Any double ended 150w MH bulb will work. The stock is 14k, some prefer to go up to 20k - totally depends on the look you want.

If you are looking for a bulb that will give you color and growth, then you should try the pheonix 14 k bulb. It really does look nice.

Can somebody please help me with the following problem...

One of my pistol shrimp somehow got into the filter cabinet and is now behind one of the return pumps.

I want to get the shrimp out but the area is awefully cramped and I can't even get the pump out! :o
The return elbow is stuck. Is it possible to remove this? Do I have to twist it like a screw or just pull it out?

I have to remove the return elbow to get the pump out!

Nano's are nice but those small filter cabinets I really hate! :furious:

How do you do maintenance when everything is stuck like hell???

Please help me.

Regards,

Marcel

I am planning on grabbing an extra pump to add some flow in the tank, but wasn't sure what to get. I was looking at a koralia(?) nano, but wasn't sure if it would be enough or if the next size up would be too much. What does everyone out there use?

What kind of difference would I see between the 14000K and the 20000K? Just a color, or am I going to see a little heat increase? I get a little bit of a heat issue already with the stock, and am thinking about an extra fan, but...

Im playing with my new phone and testing uploading HD video. The lights just came on so the tank doesn't look so good.

Gently twist the return elbow back and forth and it will come out. It's not threaded, but they can be in there pretty tight

I've got two Koralia 1's - seems like the consensus is that the k2 is a bit much, and the knano isn't enough. If you can afford it, skip the koralia and get a Vortech MP10 (nobody said this was a cheap hobby :) )
