JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I finally got my filtration all set up. I put an eheim wet/dry under the stand. I got an aquaclear 110 that takes up almost the whole back. I used a dremel to notch the lid on the aquaclear to allow me to remove the media basket and hang a Reef Octopus 100 HOB in it. I used the media box that came with it and filled that with seachems prepacked phosphate remover, matrix carbon, and purigen pouches.

I will take some picks of it asap!

Curious why you opted for the media box media as well as the eheim wet/dry.
Seems expensive to do the eheim and then do more media elsewhere, couldn't you have just used the media box?

Did you consider doing running a saphire skimmer (same cost as the octopus), the fuge mod for the AC100, then using the eheim or a smaller media reactor (saphire nano - 2nd compartment) for filtration?

Is this a FO system?

Mine, with a Koralia Nano and a Koralia 1 in addition to the rear output pumps gets up to around 83F with the room temp at 71F - that's with the stock 14K 150W bulb and two of the 18W Actinic PC's from the Nanotuners mod. I keep the heater at around 81F so there's not too much variance between lights on/off. I have a ReefKeeper Lite set to kick on a 2-fan Azoo if it gets to 83.5F and it typically comes on just once a day, after the lights have been on for about 6 hours - the fan cools it down pretty quick, back down .3 or .4 degrees within 30 minutes.

mine goes from 76.7 to 82.2 with 6 hours of MH with a chiller its 78-80 24/7. Basically you need to remove 1 degree an hour with whatever you are cooling with.

Through out the years I have found that the eheim wet/dry works better than your average sume set up. I know it does not offer a place to grow algae or have more water volume but they are very efficient. They also are syphon fed and pump themselves empty. I guess if you have read about them you already know that but I like the extra surging water movement ther create. I use the media box that came on the jbj nano and filled that with the media so I do not need to add any reactors on other pumps.

My LFS sells the octopus for a good price and I thought it was cool because it is clear so having a lot of stuff hanging off the back it would not be a noticable as a skimmer with a blue or black cap sticking up. I have it in the corner of my bed room so I have to keep my whife happy as far as the look is concerned.

This tank is going to be for lps and softies only. No fish in this one....

Having the skimmer in the ac filter allows me a place to top off with less noticable effects on the critters.....

You've got good logic, keep it clean and limit the number of pumps - if you are running the stock media basket (with media) in the center chamber, and the octo HOB INSIDE the AC 120 ... then are you doing anything else with the AC? If not, I'm not sure why you need it .... seems like you could get a standard HOB skimmer and skip the AC120 altogether. On the bright side ... you could use the limited remaining space in the AC for a small fuge for chaeto :)

I assume everyone here has the link to the AC 70 mod, but holler if you need it and I'll post

I guess those sapphire skimmers are clear too but the octopus seemed like it would do a better job. It is beefier so to speak. The one I bought has a very large motor on it compared to the ones on line that I have seen. It must be the new model...?

With the left over space I have cheato under an old cpr refuge light. The large motor on the octopus would not fit in the back so I had to improvise and ended up with an awesome two in one.

hello.. i have a 28g with the PC lights.. i have been having issues with micro bubbles from the stock return pumps.. has anyone else had this issue?

i pulled the pumps out and made sure the lines were tight, but they are still there..

any suggestions?

Its there because when the water falls over from the 2nd and 4th chambers into the 1st and 5th chambers its rather like a waterfall and so drags bubbles down right into the pump area on te side chambers. The bubbles then get sucked into the pump and blown into the display. You need to keep the water level high enough so that the waterfall is as small as possible...ie make sure the water levels between chambers 2nd+4th compared to 1st+5th are almost the same...that way you wont get the waterfall effect causing bubbles in 1st+5th chambers.

Also, JBJ supplied the tanks with two extra sponges that go on the 1st+5th chambers to catch the bubbles. Make sure you are using the sponges if the water levels arent similar as they will tap air bubbles preventing them from being dragged into the pumps.

AS I keep my water level almost the same by toppng up daily, I dont need to use the sponges. Also, if the tank is new for some reason the effect is more. My tank gets NO bubbles in the display area.

HTH.
