JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Hi all, got my nano setup last night. I got a used one with the upgraded hqi MH and PC combo. Joining the nano club too. :) I'll try to get some pic's up soon.
Should I replace the 2 return pumps with some mj 900's or leave them, he had this nano for 2 years I belive? I got the tunze 9002 but it doesn't fit unless I cut off the magnet part and I don't want to cut it. Is there any other option for a skimmer or just do weekly water changes. Please let me know, Thanks

Has anyone seen the new Super Reef Octopus LX1000? I'm currently in skimmer hell trying to decide which one to get. I think I've narrowed it down to the Deltec MCE300 or the SRO LX1000. Here is the link to the SRO. http://www.reefspecialty.com/p629/S...on-the-Back-Protein-Skimmer/product_info.html It comes with the new Bubble Blaster pump. Hopefully someone will have some video or a review on it pretty quick. I talked to Reef Sepcailty and they only have one left in stock.

Alright guys, got one for ya. I've got the 2x18 retro PC upgrade, but my lights "click" off every 15 minutes or so. They stay off for about 3 minutes, then come back on - process repeats. I'm guessing the lamp is getting too hot and the built in thermal catch is turning it off. I've got the stock fans running, but thought about upgrading them to possible get more flow? For the time being, I've put my double azoo on the back over chambers 1-2 and pointed over the hood to push more flow over the top (but I'd like to dedicate the azoo strictly to water cooling - and it can't really do 2 things at once :))

Questions:
  • Anyone else seeing this behavior?
  • Anyone get the silentx upgrade from nanotuners
  • If you're using an azoo for primary or supplementary water cooling, I assume you've got it mounted on the back over chambers 1-2 and tilted down toward the water (instead of up and over the hood). Any other configurations out there?

SlvrSurfRidr: I posted an alternative and vastly more effective cooling setup which I did by taking apart the Azoo fans...you can of course use PC fans etc. Here is the post on page 15: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1659353&page=15

You do need to take the feeding lid out though. I use this setup in a very warm room and it keeps the temp at a max of 80'F which I set via a controller. Hope that helps.

As for the light problem, I havent read of anyone else having this problem. Maybe the fan upgrade will help?

I would appriciate it. My tank dosent have 3 compartments like some others that I have seen. The overflow is in the center which holds the filter media tray then there is a smaller slot on either side of that, I have a heater in one of these. Then there is a small slot on either side of that where the returns are. Which slot does the skimmer go in? Sorry if this makes no sense.:crazy1:

Thanks
Ron

Does anyone know where I can put a skimmer or if I should get a HOB skimmer??????

Anybody have any lighting recommendations for a 30" t5 ballast? LFS told me coralife but I wanna know if there are any other brands I should look at first, altho I like the prices on the Coralife ballasts. Any advice??

How do you all know when it's time to change the HQI bulb? Do you just go on a schedule or actually let them burn out? I plan on getting the Phoenix 14K, right now I still have the stock bulb. I've got a hair algae issue as of late and I'm almost positive it's from my water source - I've been using distilled water from the grocers for water changes and topping off pretty much since I started. I'm getting a Mighty Mite RO/DI next week so hopefully that will help with that and I'm sure it will take some time to notice. But, I got this tank in August and it was used so I'm not sure how long this bulb has been run; the guy said not long at all but who knows, you know? My Nitrates are zilch and I don't have a phosphate test kit. I run the HQI bulb for 8 hrs/day.

Trendy, You need to change the MH bulb every 12 months of use and hearing that you have hair algae it probably is from your water the water from the store probably has phosphates in it and if and when you change your bulb you need to shorten your lighting cycle and work back up to 8 hours to allow the corals to adjust to the new bulb.

There are a few that have put the Tunze in the rear, middle chamber. I also think several have used the Sapphire skimmer as well. I've been hung up between the Deltec MCE300 or the new Super Reef Octopus LX1000. Both are hang on the back skimmers.

I just bought a Tunze 9002 nano-skimmer and put it in the middle chamber. Sucked out gunk the first day and hasn't stopped since. I bought a Sapphire Aquatics skimmer and never got a working unit from them. Now they are defunct and I'm out a ton of money. Oh well.

how is evaporation and overheating with this tank (with an hqi lighting)??
Welcome aboard, feel like we've answered this one a million times - but for the newbie I'll give it one more go :lolspin:

Evaporation isn't that much, primarily based on the closed hood. There are several things you can do to increase it - remove the feeder hood and do a fan mod (see Sashin's post on the previous page of this thread). You can also add a double azoo over the rear chambers (1-2) to force more evap. Most people here are using an ATO to handle it (because automation is your friend) however you could easily do a manual top off every couple days. Quite a few people that use the ATO are dosing kalk as well. Hope that helps!

I just received my tank and was examining the back area and wondered how to easily change out the return pumps. I removed the elbow at the top but the chamber is so narrow and the stock pumps are suctioned down. I figure there may be a good tip other than just pull on the tube...Also, where should the pump prefilter sponges ride in the pump chambers, even with the chamber wall, slightly above or below. Thanks for any guidance and I am really looking forward to starting a reef tank again after a 7 year hiatus.

Don't pull on the tube, lol. You'll pull the tube off and leave the pump down at the bottom :-)

What I found works best is just yank up on the power cord to unseat the pump, then just lift it out.

Okay... I put the sapphire skimmer in the middle chamber, and my tank almost overflowed. What did I do wrong?

Remember, the skimmer adds mass to the tank and displaces water. Anytime you put anything in your tank, that leaves less room for the water, and the water needs to go somewhere ;-)

Dude that clam is also going to suck the calcium out the water! Wow, well done for growing it so well.

Re: JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Has anyone had any leaking issues with this tank? I am on my third tank shipped from jbj, and right out of the box they leak. jbj hasn't really been very helpful in communicating with me to help my fear that this isnt going to continue to happen. who has had this tank setup for a long time with no issues?
thanks

i actually neglected it a bit in my 120g, but somehow it go to be a giant....b/w the dosing i do and the kalkwasser mixed in with the top off water, i should be okay.

I've actually had the opposite in customer service. I'm on my 3rd ballast in less than a month with them. I'm not sure what is going on but the ballasts keep overheating and going dead. I called their customer service and told them my problem. Got a ballast sent out the next day free of charge. Even emailed me a UPS return label to send the old one back. A week later that ballast died on me. Called again and they sent me another one even before they received the first one back. Died again the other day. Called and talked to the same lady thank god and they are sending me another ballast along with a whole new LED hood free of charge. Their customer service has been top notch and makes me want to buy JBJ products in the future because they appear to stand by what they sell.
