JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Wow, just reaized my tank temp. is at 86......... I really don't want a chiller because of the extra bulk and cords it will add, so I am thinking of investing in the led lights now. I saw someone had them on here earlier, so I have a question for you. Will I still need a chiller with the leds?

Re: JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I have the LED canopy and have zero heat issues. Tank hovers around 78-79. I do live in WI, so I can't say for certain that I won't have temp issues in the summer, but as far as I can tell the lights don't affect the temp like mh do. Before I had a heater installed the water stayed at room temp with the lights on or off. I'm pretty impressed with this setup all around.

you shouldn't, as long as the room temp isn't too high.

Room temps stay comfortable (tank is in my room ). The halide light just heats that tank up at a ridiculous rate. I really didn't think it would be that bad. THe guy I got it from didnt have big issues with it, but I can't see how. With the price of a decent chiller being what it is, I am thinking that just saving up the extra cash would be more than worth it as long as there are absolutely no heat issues.

I know what you're saying. I was looking for lighting advice on a tank I'm setting up and he was basicall yelling at me, telling me that 250watts of halide do not generate more heat in a tank than 250watts of t5. I asked him if he was sure and he gave me his version of a scientific explanation. I then asked him if he's ever had a MH and, of course, he said, "no." I then told him that I had a tank with a 250w MH and the temp would reach 85*, I switched to 6 overdriven t5's(about 300 watts) and the temp never got above 80*. He said there had to be something else contributing to the heat. I did nothing but switch from MH to T5 and he called me a liar. Well, he setup a new tank decided to use 2 250w MH's and guess what, he had to buy a chiller. The heat MH's generate is tremendous, see how long you can keep your hand under a halide before your skin begins to melt off.

GinMartini, I've been following your thread, and thanks for letting me know about the stand.

Found the problem. Heaters thermostat wasn't working correctly. Had it turned all the way down and tank stayed at 84 all night with lights out. Took it outthis morning and have had steady temps at 79. Now I am looking at replacing the stock bulb win a 150 a phoenix double ended. Is this the correct bulb for the hood? First halide set up.

Just got my 28G CF-Quad in the mail on Monday. I am "downsizing" from my 72G Bowfront. I couldn't keep up on maintenance in the 72 and it got kind of out of hand.

JBJ 28G CF-Quad
JBJ 28G HQI Stand
JBJ Wavemaker
Magfloat (Small)

16'' X 15'' Eggcrate to protect the bottom of the tank
25 lbs. Live Sand (NEW)
50+ lbs. Live Rock (Had for a few years)

2 Percula Clowns
1 Sebae Clown
1 Green Chromis
A few hermits and snails (I need a better clean up crew)

Clear (No rockscape)

Old and New. Can't wait to move my fish in!

Coming soon JBJ 28G Skimmer, a organized "wire tuck", and some coral when i can afford it.

Thnaks for looking!

I was in the same boat as you (75 gallon tank; I couldn't keep up with the maint). Having this nice little cube is such a relief and it looks much better and has freed up lots of space in my room. The wavemaker for it is really cool, too.

What are you going to do for extra flow, if you do anything at all? I set mine up barebottom and would like a small powerhead pointing up to keep detritus from settling. I am hooking this tank up well, so tunze or vortech are not out of the picture, although, it seems most people find that these are a little to much flow. Any experience with this would be helpful in my decision!

If you are going to have SPS in that tank, then I'd definately get an MP10. I have one for my tank and its flow is great.

if you're going bb, you'll probably need to use the vortech or the tunze. In order to keep the detritus from settling, you're going to need a good amount of flow, the stock pump won't cut it. Even adding a small pump lie a koralia nano won't cut it. BB's demand a lot of flow, typically a closed loop and some strong pumps.

I have a question I got back into the hobby with a 28cf after about 6 years.
has anybody ever put a sump in the stand that comes with the nano-cube?????

Suggestions needed! Tunze or vortech? Also, I'm replacing the stock bulb with a phoenix bulb. How should I go about acclimating my corals to the light?

I have the tunze nanostream an really like it. I don't have the controlable one but it puts out alot of flow.

Well I picked up a cucumber, 3 turbo snails, two astreas and 2 blue leg hermits today. I also got the chiller plumbed and holding steady at 79 degrees. Now I just need a mp10.

Well I've been debating what my next tank will be (currently have a BC 14 w/ 150 watt halide, 95% SPS) and after reading this thread the NC28 HQI looks great w/ skimmer and chiller. Has anyone tried a calc reactor? My biggest pet peeve with my BC has been an inability to keep Calc. levels consistently high w/o dosing and a reactor would be great if it would work with a NC28...

Interested to see what the sps keepers are doing as well. 2 part or kalk? Also, those of you with temp probs, I found pointing a fan at the halide ballast (if you have it in the stand) also helps with lowering temp some.
