JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Oh. Sorry. I will tell you I was shocked at how much more circulation I got out of the 29gph difference between the stock pumps and the 1200's. I got other problems for that 29gph increase though!

I'm pretty sure the maxijet 900's will still pump out more water than the original stock pumps even tho the maxi jets are 36 GPH less than the stock pumps.

I joined your club. or the LED club at least.

Hey guys, couple of questions...

I got the jbj 28 with power compacts but quickly decided to upgrade to a current sunpod with a metal halide. Would acrylic or glass be better to cover the top now? I don't want the fish getting out or my daughters hands getting in =)

Also, anyone used the aquatic life skimmer? Will it fit in the main overflow?

On the flow issue with the mj1200's, I wonder what would happen if you put the hydor flo rotating devices on the returns and ran them both on without the wave maker. The restriction from the hydor flo's may be enough to slow it down but still have much more turnover than just running one pump at a time. You could then use the wave maker on some in tank koralia's for those of us that can't afford the mp10. I know there are some mixed reviews on the rotating devices but it may be an inexpensive solution.

I like your LED DS4x4. Are you happy with it? Thinking about replacing my HQI hood with an LED hood.

so far it's great. no heat added to the tank and my sunset monti is starting to color back up. long term only time will tell. got it for the foster/smith 599. sale.

Some shots from my HQI NC. Tank is running for almost 10 months now.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Once i break down my 100gal rubbermaid with all the rock/leftover coral/fish im going to hook my BRS Dual Reactor up to the nano. should be crystal clear and algae free for months at a shot. My only wish on this tank was that some of the LED's where closer to 6500K since i love the growth i get from those bulbs

MJ1200 - Flow, Well my theory did not hold up. I purchased a couple of the Hydor Flo Rotating devices and here is what I found out:

The difference in the back chambers is about 6 inches when you go from only running one MJ1200 at a time versus running both of them with the stock diffusers. Once I replaced the stock diffusers with the Hydor Flo's, it actual had less restriction and lowered the level by about another 1/2 inch. The level in the display is pretty much level with the plastic trim.

Wow, Marcel, that is a very beautiful example of the NC28! What halide bulb are you using? And do you dose CA/Alk etc manually or is it automated?

Thanks Sahin!

I use a BLV Nepturion 14000K bulb. But the next bulb will be more blue-ish (AquaMedic 16000K?) as I miss that now. Corals color slightly different under only HQI light. The orange branching montipora on the right for instance is supposed to be red under more blue light.

Also, I find it very hard to find corals that color well right below the bulb. The 4 most upper placed acroporas for instance don't do well and will be replaced. I already have a yellow Fiji leather that does OK so it will get a permant spot in the upper regions of my little reef. I am open for more suggestions... :)

I dose TropicMarin BioCalcium and BioMagnesium manually.

But not all is well...
I do have some nuisance algae like Ventricaria, Valonia, Dictyosphaeria and Cladophora which are harde to get rid of.

Also, I am very irritated by the filter cabinet. It is to narrow for my hands and I can't seem to get the return elbows loose so I can clean the filter cabinet. I am afraid to use my full force and ripping/breaking out the divider wall or even worse, the glass behind. The next time I think I will use a wrench to get them loose.

Regards,

Marcel

Hey guys, wondering if anyway could answer a few questions.

1) i have the 28 jbj PC and will have softies and LPS. what should i run in the media basket? Should i leave the carbon in there?

2) I was thinking about ordering 25lbs of live rock either today or tomorrow. Anyone else go more or less?

3) any other suggestions for these tanks welcome! tank is set up waiting to be filled!

Hi,

I have my 28 cf quad sitting in the living room unpacked and dry but waiting the transfer from my BC 14 right next to it. 25 lbs should be more than enough. Insodfar as media i would only maybe run the carbon occasionally but not an all the time event. I never ran the biomedia in my biocube (or any other tank that contained live rock) and would only run the floss and carbon upon occasion.

thanks for your response! Today i was told i should not cycle my tank with live rock. i was under the impression that i would scrub the rock right out of the box in some salt water and then put it straight in the tank to kick start my cycle. I thought you only needed to cure rock when you were adding it to an existing system. reason not to put the rock in the tank would be because there would be die off accumulating in my SSB and cause extreme nitrate problems for my tanks future. any input greatly greatly appreciated.

have any of you made a custom stand instead of the jbj stands?

Yes, I built my own stand. I also recall another guy built an even better stand than mine. Its posted somewhere on RC.

As there isnt a sump, its quite easy to build a stand for these tanks. Also, if you can find a piece of furniture item than suits your room etc, and its strong enough you might want to use that. I found one or two items, but because I wanted lots of height (I have children) I decided to build my own. Else I would have bought one items and just reinforced it if required.
