JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Yeah these stands are small. Seems like they just got the 12g dx stand, put 4 pedestals on it with a bigger top to fit the 28g.

Nice. My cabinet looks like a spaghetti factory inside and on the back.

I hear ya man, that's got to be super common with these stands. There's really no graceful way to run all of the wires with such limited room. I was able to clean up the inside for the most part but there's still quite a rat's nest of wires behind the stand. I tried to roll up the extra wire and twist tie some of it but it's still not pretty. At least that's behind the stand I suppose.

Hi all!

Hi all!

Hi, im new to RC and looking for advice. i currently have a 12g nano jbj, and want to purchase a 28g within the week... should i spend the extra $ for the LED version? sounds like i should mainly because of the heat problem and not having to mess with a chiller. Any way, any advice would be much appreciated.

I would just b/c in the long run it will save you money. I live in Indiana and just set up my tank about a month ago. Already, we've had a few days where it's been in the mid 50s and I've noticed my tank creeping up after running the lights all day. I would definitely recommend the extra money towards the LEDs

Hey Scott, welcome to RC.
I'm pretty biased about this as I have the LED version and love it but I do believe it's the way to go. You hit the nail on the head with the heat issue and chiller needed for the HQI. The LEDs don't really get hot, they are always cool to the touch. Now, and I hate to admit this, if you keep your house really warm you will still see temps around 80-81 degrees even with the LEDs without a fan. My wife just had our first baby 2 weeks ago and she was just under 6lbs so we have to keep the house at about 75 since she has so little fat on her little bones to keep her warm. In a few weeks we'll likely be able to keep the temp in the house down to about 70 like we typically do year round at which time the LEDs will allow the tank to sit at 78 all day with no chiller or fans, it's just the warmer ambient temp that's keeping the tank a little on the warm side now. A fan would definitely be enough to offset that heat if I was worried about it but the temp isn't out of control, just a little warm so I'm cool with it.
The LED version also has moon lights, Actinics, and 14k daylights built in so you don't need to add any retro kits to get that other stuff. You also get the shimmer of MH bulbs without the heat and electric bill. The total wattage for all the lights is 89Watts as compared to 150W and more with Halides, not to mention the actinics and moon light you might add. My electric bill will hopefully be much lower than it was when I had my 90 gal with 2x 250W halides and 2x 110W actinics. If you have the cash to spend now on the LEDs they will pay for themselves in the long run in lesser costs on electricity, especially if you have to buy a chiller. Oh, and without the chiller you'll have quite a bit more space in your stand. Oh, and as far as intensity and growth, I've had my Nano Cube up and running for 6 weeks and I can definitely see some pretty good growth on my corals. Who know how it'll do over a longer period since this stuff is pretty new but it should be alright. These LEDs are supposed to last about 10 years (you'll also save $$ in the long run on not having to buy new MH bulbs every year).
Wow, I need to stop typing. You can tell I'm a big fan of the LEDs. :)

Protein skimmer fitting on 28 gallon jbj led setup

Does the Tunze DOC 9002 Nano Protein
Skimmer by Tunze fit perfectly in the new 28 gallon jbj led aquarium setup? I just purchased the aquarium and would like this skimmer but only if it fits without any modifications. Thanks..

You have to remove the magnet off the tunze for it to fit. It's not a difficult mod but a mod nonetheless.

Yes, it does, but people seem to like the InTank cup. I haven't bought one yet so I can't offer an opinion on that. I've been thinking about how to just "raise the cup" up a bit

is the tunz skimmer a good investment or can i do without it? and if it is how do i remove the magnet from it? i am planning to make a reef with softies such as polyps, mushrooms, clams, frogspawns, things like that

there's a youtube video on how to remove the magnet. Some ppl prefer just going with an updated media basket and frequent water changes. I'm starting my nano and plan on doing both but I won't be using tunze, instead I'll be using the cheap ebay model.

Thanks Corrado for your input, and i must say you have a pretty impressive setup. What is the apex light controller that you have mounted in your stand, is that a mod to your existing lighting? I will hopefully have my tank up and cycling within the nest couple of weeks, so i will need more advice soon!!

Yes, the magnet has to be removed so it can slide down. The cup just makes the skimmer work and I believe raise the hood w/o removing the cup

so with this steviet cup must i still remove the magnet from the tunze to have it properly fit my jbj 28 gallon led setup

Alright man,here you go:

That's a link to a few posts I made several pages back with photos on the StevieT Cup, the Tunze cup, and the magnet removal. The link will take you directly to my post and then read down through the rest of the page for a few more related posts. Hope that helps. :)
