JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Anyone got a base reading on MG when mixing your own water? Mine seems to be running low (1020-ish), but when I dose I'm getting some unforeseen results .... just making sure I'm not alone

Western reefer! Nice rockwall! Would be thrilled to have something like that in mine! Do you have a diy thread on how to make one?

mmm...I don't know if this is the right place to ask. Mods, please move it to the right section, if needed.

Lately water just evaporates too quickly in my jbj28g, so I am thinking about getting a JBJ ATO; is it worth of getting it?

I would agree with the post above, you'll want an ATO with the HQI and actually I have one even with the LED lighting. It allows you to go out of town for a few days or more without having to worry about your SG shifting or your pumps running dry. Just good insurance and one of several things you can do to make reefkeeping easier/more automated.
I personally advocate for a DIY ATO if you happen to have some DIY skills; costs less and can be customized to your taste/needs.

I am getting ready to upgrade from a NC12 to an NC 28. (Actually, my wife is buying it for me for my 40th!) She has agreed to my list (and is now getting that trip to disney that she has wanted for 5 years lol)

Some equipment I already have of course, but here is the list I have put together. Please let me know if you would add or change anything"¦.. I realize that I do not need everything here, but I want to be as complete as possible J My last tank was a 300G reef and I could not afford to go all out in every aspect. I would like to do that with this tank if possible.

Tank/stand (of course)

1 Media basket

1 RKL "“ (8 outlets, ATO attachment, Temp probe, RKM SLR)

Nanocustoms 5.6 CREE LED Retrofit kit (20 royal blues and 10 neutral whites "“ 3 dimmable drivers w/ silent fans and a moonlight) "“ overkill "“ likely J

Tunze 9002 skimmer

Modified tunze skimmer cup

Nano Glo fuge light

2 hydor flo rotating returns

2 MJ 1200's

1 axis DC-250 backup battery air pump

1 aqua medic twin dosing pump

1 Vortech MP10 ES

1 heater (not sure which yet)

40 lbs live rock

1 "“1 ½ inches of sand - small but not fine

My current stock list:

1 Purple firefish

1 Geometric Hawkfish

1 twinspot blenny

1 Candycane pistol shrimp (I will be adding an aurora goby once the new lights are in and I can shut the hood)

1 emerald crab

10 nassarius snails

6 margarita snails

Corals:

Acans

Chalice

1 nice torch

A few zoo frags

1 Monti cap

I definitely plan on keeping more sps

A couple of shots of my current tank........

The rock is pretty bare as I wait for the upgrade of the tank and lights for sps. The sand will be spaced better in the new tank so it wont look like fragland :)

My favorite Chalice. 29 bucks and coloring up nicely

Last one - favorite Acan

Thanks for checking over the equipment list and for any suggestions!

Is there a website or link to DIY ATO. Thanks to corrado007 and SlvrSurfRidr.

Sounds like a pretty good setup, Mkbtank. I just got my new led up and is cycling. 40 lbs of lr is alot for that tank, i have 19-20 lbs right now and it is fairly full, i will probably add 1 - 2 more small rocks but that is it. why not buy the led stock canopy? just wondering...

Thanks Scott. I have that rock but am not committed to using it all. Thanks for the heads up.

I was given the 12g NC by a friend in my reef club (dvrc) and the lid was gutted. I am currently using PC's and was looking for good lights for this hood. During that time I was already itching to upgrade so I wanted a light that would light the 12g (wayyy overkill) and also fit the 28g when I got it. (I had holes drilled to fit both lids). So this kit was a good option.

2 hydor flo rotating returns

2 MJ 1200's

I thought about using those hydor rotating returns on my 28 in the past. I'm assuming you are planning on attaching them to the returns at the top of the tank on each side? I have not tried them because I thought they would spray water all over the hood while they rotated because those returns are so close to the surface. Does anybody use them on their returns on the 28? Do they work?

they work fine and don't spray. I'm not using them at this time, but I've used them on my old NC12 (which is even closer to the surface). They can get clogged so you have to clean the hydor-flo's every couple of months (which is easy).

Glad I asked. I will pick them up and give the a "whirl" !

Thanks Scott. You too.

Now thanks to this thread and Western Reefer, I think I am going to try my hand at a rock wall also!

What is the best adhesive/brand to use for the gaps?
