For those people with the HQI model, how do you deal with overheating the tank. Is a chiller my only option? My tank seemed to peak at around 80 degrees today.

When mine was HQI (it's not anymore)- I unscrewed the little feeder lid. Put velcro tape on an azoo fan and on the hood and velcro'd the azoo fan so that it blew into that feeder door. I then lifted the front of the hood about an inch to let air flow improve. That kept the heat down considerably.

I just stuck that Azoo fan on the back of the tank above the overflow. Works just great there. What I notice is that it doesn't lower the temp with the light on, but will keep it at the same temp, so I have mine hooked up with my controller and when the tank hit 79 deg it flips the Azoo on and it stays at that temp till the light goes off. It has a nice low profile in the back as well.

I spent some money on a Arctica chiller

It was worth every penny. My tank is very stable and I grow Sps corals without a problem..

For those who use a vortech mp10 ES in this tank, how are you using it? Modes, power, positioning?
I have a frogspawn and candy cane LPS and they don't seem to like heavy flow, but I would like to increase a bit. Using about 40-50% power at random lagoon mode. At feeding days and water change I use nutrient transport mode for a few hours.
Thanks.

I run mine in reef crest at about 45% during the day and a reduced reef crest setting of 25% at night. (I'm controlling it via the Aquacontroller Apex) I have mostly LPS, so I don't need higher flow. I have the pump on the right side of the tank about 1/2 way up and about 6" from the front of the tank.

That's nice. I didn't know apex could control the mp10. I just ordered one and im happy with this information.

The caveat is that your mp10 needs to be wireless and you need to buy the Wireless eXpansion Module (WXM) for the Apex. IMO, the cost is well worth it :)

I don't get it - why can't you hard wire it and avoid all the extra costs?

You can if all you want to do is turn the power to the vortech on/off. And that won't work if you have the vortech battery backup...

With the wireless module, you can program the apex to change vortech modes randomly or at set times throughout the day. The wireless module also allows you to integrate the vortech into your apex's feed modes.

Neat!
Too bad I don't have the wireless version nor did I purchased the wireless module for the apex.

Room Odor

Room Odor

My Skimmer (Tunze 9002) works great but it stinks and it is stiinking up my living room. My wife is not happy. I am now cleaning it every day, even though it only gets me about a 1/2 inch of gunk (but thats enough).

I am running Chemipure elite.

Should I:

1)Find and run a hang on reactor with carbon also?
2)Put some carbon in the collection cup to neutralize the smell?

Any other ideas??

Thanks!

I dont think I have ever heard of this happening, do you have a large bio-load in the tank? Does the room stink you leave the skimmer off for a day or two?

Really? No other smelly skimmer out there :)

I will try that. Taking off the skimmer for a couple of days. Fish load is really light. 1 firefish, 1 Geometric Hawk, and a tailspot blenny. i do have a lot of acans and lps which I do spot feed quite a bit (3x per week). I do not have any algae issues and the tank water does not smell, so maybe I guess that is why the skimmer works so well.

Can I add some carbon to the collection cup? Would that help? maybe I will ask Roger from Tunze.
