JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Could it be possible to add say the nanotuners 2x24 or the 2x36 to add more actinics to make it more noticeable rather than only 36 watts total. I know the upgrade is mainly for just adding colors but i was wondering if the 2x24 or the 2x36 would fit in the hood so maybe i could have a higher wattage to add a sunrise and sunset part or lighting. I'm kinda new to all this as i am sure i am not using the right words for everything just kinda curious on what everyone thought and your suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks alot

They have 2 hood options available now. The intermediate is lower at 36w
and the PRO is the 89w

Just thought I'd share some updated photos of my 28 Gal LED Nano.

Hi,

Beautiful tank. On the second pic in the right upper corner, what kind of coral is this?

(2) Koralia's?

(2) Koralia's?

Posted separately but thought I may get a few more replies here:

I've got about a 3 month old NC 28 HQI, I switched the stock pumps for MJ1200's and am considering 1 or 2 Koralia 425's on a wavemaker.

Right now I've just got softies and LPS, but want to move into SPS as well. Should I go with:

1. (2) Koralia 425's on a wavemaker
2. (2) Koralia 250's on a wavemaker
3. (1) Koralia 425 (maybe on a wavemaker)

Thx!

Bogdanek, Not bad for your first post!

I jumped into a jbj 28 HQI on Tuesday night. Got it from Craigslist for 300. Its 6 mths old. Already, I want leds. I would like the nanotuners 5.6 kit but at 600.00, yikes! They have sweet driver setups with manual dim overrides but its still to high of a price to justify for a nano reef. Although, They do boast about their heatsink and is available separatly so I may go with that and rapidled or reefledlights components to diy something. I wanted to see if anyone on this thread is considering the new nano kit that rapidled is starting to ship tomorrow. I have been told by them that you could retrofit this kit into a jbj as well even though it is made for the oceanic.

Hey, what is everyone using for a skimmer on the 28 gal system? What fits besides hang on skimmers?
Several good ones that you can look into that aren't HOB:

  • Tunze 9002
  • AquaEuro Nano
  • Saphire Aquatics nano

Tunze 9002 is the overwhelming favorite here. The only drawback, is you lose your center compartment (which many people like to use for media and/or fuge setup). The AquaEuro is cheapest, it does a great job but the construction is cheaper and fine tuning the cup is much harder than it should be.

IMHO if you are going to spend the cash on a good skimmer, hands down the best skimmer you can get is the Aquamaxx HOB-I. I've tried the MCE-300 and several other HOB units, but the construction, performance, and quietness of this skimmer blows them all away.

Hey all, I purchased a used 28g HQI about a month ago and have read this whole thread in the time since... It was a downgrade from 55g tank that I had going...

I'll try to get some pictures up later, but very happy to have joined the club!

Sorry if I missed it in the forum, there was a lot to take in haha!Do the other two, besides the Tunze, fit in the designated skimmer chamber?

OK, I am leaning towards HOB but want a small footprint too. Can anyone with an aquamaxx please snap some pics of the back of your jbj. I just wat to see how high it sticks out from the top.

I have only had mine for 2 weeks. I modified it by cutting about 1 inch from the horizontal part of the intake tube and replacing the 'T' outflow with a 90 degree elbow. It is super quiet (cant hear it over the stock pumps). It has this neat elbow on the cup to attach a 1/2 inch flex hose and plumb back into the pump compartment so it won't overflow onto the carpet. So far I am happy.

the AquaEuro actually fits in the stock skimmer chamber (I know, crazy right?) - the saphire (if you can find one, they went out of business) is a perfect fit in the center

Thanks! I'll probably have to give the aquaeuro a try since right now I don't want to give up the center chamber

I know I've seen some people throughout the thread say that their return pumps were pretty noisy? Anyone figure out why, and how to fix it? Mine are driving me crazy!

I have the two stock returns...

Also if I was to upgrade them should I go with two Mj1200's? It seems like some people do, but others say that is too much.

My one pump is a maxijet 900, other is stock (going into the refugium). I also have a vortech MP10.

The loudest on my setup is the fans in the hood
