JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

OK i need some help. I just got the coralife aqualight pro, 250 watt 10,K HQI metal halide lamp, with two 65 watt true actinic 03 blue. what i meant to get was the 150 metal halide.

1. is the 250 to big for this tank? ( 28g nano cube ).

2. I'm going from cp to the metal halide. how long should i run the halide lamp to start
with, as of now i have it on for only two hours.

3. should i just take the 250 back and get the 150 halide.

4. any one else using metal halide, what is your light schedule.

any help would be great. thanks

I saw where a lot of people are using kalk in their ATO. Does anybody run a kalk reactor on their nano cube? I have been looking at the TLF KW Reactor 300.

I just looked at my tank this morning and I placed a brand new pad in the basket last night. Water level fell about 1" in about 8hrs. Any suggestions? Left it as is while I go to work but it's worrying me.

i ordered my tank from http://www.jbjnanocubes.com and it came today and i was really excited only to find out that there is a ton of broken glass shards in the box. =(
i tried calling them all day and no one would pick up and they didnt have an answering machine. i emailed them and they offered to ship me another one or give me a refund but since then have not been responsive. now i wont even know if i will have a tank by the end of the week.

Ange,

Not anymore. I just changed the In-tank basket layout. Floss pad on top, Chaeto in the middle and ChemiPure Elite and Purigen at the bottom. Had an extra pad in the chaeto chamber to keep it from escaping into the main tank but I found out that Chaeto doesn't attach so I can just pick it out if I see it floating around.

On a side note, I put both back pumps (MJ-1200's) on simultaneously today instead of alternating. I had to move the basket back against the glass because it was overflowing and sucking the water level way down when I had it up against the display side. Is this going to cause problems? Possibly with the ATO maybe? I'm a little worried if the pad gets dirty and causes the water level to drop or will it not do that when moved way back? Suggestions?

Thanks

Pushing the basket back won't hurt anything, but since you are getting unfiltered water into your back chambers you may end up with additional detritus buildup back there which will require more frequent cleaning. If you don't have one already, look into an InTank basket, they handle the additional flow much better.

That's a lot of light and heat for a 28g, are you running a chiller? I'd suggest swapping for the 150w in all honesty. 2-hrs is probably overly cautious for the switch, I'd start around 4-5hrs a day and ramp up by an hour every few days targeting 8-10hrs eventually.

Get an ATO? 1" in 8-hrs doesn't seem like an unreasonable amount of evaporation to me.

Bummer :( That's why I try to buy most of my stuff locally though, instant gratification and easy to return if you have issues.

Looking sweet!

Thanks Ange,

I do have an In-Tank basket so the 1" drop in the water was from having the basket pushed up. I moved it back and there is no gap with the supplied In-Tank spacer so I think it will be fine. Water level does drop once the filter pad starts to clog though which is usually within 24hrs. Today, I pulled out the pad and squeezed it clean and then placed it back in the top basket again. Maybe it will save me some pads since I'm going through a new one every day to day and a half. I just rinsed it in the water from the weekly water changes. Seems to clean the pad quite well. Maybe I can get 3-4 days out of it instead.

Thanks

Another question for everyone...................

Looking at replacing my Chemi-Pure Elite and Purigen in my In-Tank basket so that my chaeto will have more room to grow.

I was thinking of getting a Phosban 150 Reactor in it's place with BRS ROX Carbon .8.

My question is would this be acceptable and would a stock Accella pump run it decently? Also, where would the best place to buy BRS Carbon be? I would like to purchase a 1/2g for now and don't want to pay a fortune for shipping it.

Thanks

BRS simply refers to Bulk Reef Supply carbon. The Rox carbon is an in house product from them so you'd get it from their website.

You'll want to run the phosban reactor with an Eheim Compact 300 pump and you can see the instalation in my build thread or in ange's as well.

I wouldn't wring out the filter pad and reuse it. As long as the water is not overflowing you can keep the same pad and probably get 2 to 3 days out of it no problem. However reusing the same one is just asking to add waste to your system. The filter padding is available from the InTank website for pretty cheap.

That is what I thought about the BRS Carbon. Thank You.

So I wouldn't be able to use the Accella? My only option is an Eheim Compact 300? Wouldn't I be able to control the flow with the flow valve? Or would this overheat the pump?

I guess I'll just order some more filter pads. In Tank is where I bought my current pads so I guess I'll add it on my next order. Thanks

I change out my floss every day. It's cheap. Dont re-use it.

Yes that's not only acceptable but a great idea. Order from the BRS website ;) If you use a stock Accela that's going to be too much flow, and tapering it off will cause it to get noisy. And that's assuming the Accela will even fit in the skimmer chamber like most of us have it. The Eheim Compact 300 is $16 and the 600 is $27. Either would be perfect.

Ya, what he said!!! ^^^^ :)

See above.

Thanks everyone.

I also noticed a few small leaks around the top of the sides (black area meets glass area) that I had to Silicone and now I noticed that since I run both back pumps simultaneously, the water level has risen way up and is now leaking ever so slightly on my right front corner. If I look at the top ledges from across the other side, I can see water seeping in through the black top trim. Is this normal?

If you're talking about the level in your tank you need to reduce flow in order to drop the water level. Maybe replace one of your MJ with a lower flow pump like an Eheim 600 or a smaller MJ.

Very nice tank. How long have you had the acros in your nano?

Thank you kindly! I think I got them in April or May of this year so about 6 months

How do I drop the level? I have an In Tank basket with 2 maxijet 1200's running and the level is the same no matter what.

You should be able to take some water out to drop the level. Mine only does that when I over fill the tank with too much water

I really don't want to replace the maxijets. The tank is doing so good with them currently. What do others do that have maxijet 1200's?

If I do replace them back to the stock Accella's, would it be much of a difference? Accella's are rated at 266gph and the Maxijets at 298gph.

Is it that I have too many obstructions in the In Tank Basket?
Top=Filter Pad
Mid=Chaeto
Low=Chemi-Pure 6oz and Purigen

If that is the case, adding a Reactor with BRS Carbon in place of the Chemi-Pure and Purigen would help correct?

Thanks

I have the MJ1200 too. Try this if you're not already.

To stop the leak take a little water out.

To keep up with the flow keep your floss clean and replace often. Don't lay the Purigen flat on the shelf in the basket. Make sure you chemi-pure is hanging, use a zip tie.
