JBNY's 270 Ver2.0

Well said Joe!!!! Totally agree. I dose CaNo3 this days when my tank nitrates fall below 5ppm , works good so far..and i feed my tank heavy , 30+ fishes..
Do you dose ESV TE?

Hi Joe
I have not added any nitrates before can you tell me the brand and source of what your using and what dosage to use.

thanks Bill

I am not. I think it conflicts with what I am dosing from Triton.

post 618 right above. Dosing is based on each tank, I currently dose 0.2 ppm per day.

There is a thread (on the reef site we can't mention here) entitled "Nitrate Dosing" that was informative. In particular, a post by Randy Holmes-Farley that gave mixing instruction for a potassium nitrate solution. Basically, 10 grams of potassium nitrate into 1 liter of water makes a solution for which 1 ml will raise the nitrate by 0.8 ppm per 2 gallons of tank water.

If you don't mind paying more for the convenience, Seachem's Flourish Nitrogen (a supplement for freshwater planted aquariums) is liquid potassium nitrate. It requires dosing slowly and working up until you achieve the n concentration you are looking for but it is very effective and easily acquired.
I have used it extensively in my reef and can say it works very well.

Yeah there are definitely products to us to get nitrates into your tank. I am using powdered KNO3, from greenleafaquariums.com I mix up 43g into 500ml of rodi and dose 6ml a day. But I used to dose 15ml. So as I wrote earlier the amount you dose is dependent on your bio and feeding load.

Quick FTS, no tripod. Tank is doing good.

Joe,
Beautiful FTS, and I have to totally agree the tank is doing good, the rock even is colorful as heck, not to mention the corals are splendidly colored as well :) Corals that are encrusted appear to be taking off with growth, nice update!

Thanks, yeah everything is doing really good right now. Color is about as good as I can hope for.

Oh yeah. That's good growth!
Looking real good.

Right! after so long with poor growth, this is really nice to acros growing well in the tank.

Looking pretty sweet

Thank you!

love this shot!!

love the lights!!

thanks for sharing!

You're welcome, still rocking the MH and T5, with a some reefbrite strips to give it some pop!

Looking great Joe!

I have yet to get my tank thread going, but I just added my first frags 2 weeks ago, and added a bunch more this weekend while reconfiguring my plumbing, so now I can finally clean things up and take some pictures. I've really moved slow with this tank hoping for long term success again. I'm giving the Aqua Forest products a try. Hoping it works as well for me as it has for Perry and Debora amongst others! I'll get the thread started this week.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Now for a little update. The tank is still doing really good, so far I am extremely pleased with how everything is growing and coloring up. I have been busy with a few other projects and had not had much time to do much with the tank the last few months. Other than cleaning the glass and feeding the fish, the tank has really been on auto pilot. But it just made me realize that there is not much to do as pretty much everything is handled by dosing and with the exception of taking a test every few weeks and adjusting things there is not much to do other than enjoy the tank. I did have to change out my lights last month for their once a year change, no problems with any corals during the changeover, which is always nice.

I did another ICP test in October (see below) and the results were pretty good. Triton started to test for a few new elements they had not tested for in the past, one of them was Tungsten (W). I got a high reading on Tungsten, I am not sure what to make of it, there is no real literature about tungsten in a tank and what harm, if any, it might cause. Looking into it, it seems that some cheap pumps made in china could leach tungsten. The only thing I could think of is a rio pump I have been using for years in my top-off water, I replaced it with an extra Ehiem pump I had lying around, but I don't think that was really the cause, so I will wait and see.

Molybdenum (Mo) is still very high, I am not sure why this is so. It was high, but lower than in this test, last time I tested the water. I have not done any water changes and expected it to go down. Seeing it go up a little is perplexing, I am just going to leave it alone for now.

So here are my notes to myself for what I did to the tank based on this last ICP test.

After the results of this test I will raise Sr to 8 and add 0.65 ppm (33gm) every two weeks. I was adding 0.5 ppm (25g) every two weeks. Will add 161g of Sr to raise 3.23 ppm that will take Sr to 8.

Raise Zn and Mn and I by adding a one time 50ml dose of my ZIM Blend. This should raise Zn by 0.003 ppm and Mn by 0.0025 ppm, raise I by 0.0218 ppm.

Still need to raise I by 0.014 (add 0.7ml of Stock Iodine to 250ml ro water and dump that in tank)

Will raise the amount of I I am dosing by 0.0002 per day.
will double Zn and Mn dosages.

Vanadium raise to 1.2 by adding 1.7ml (per Triton), then 0.6ml every two week (my calculation).

Boron should add (.61 tsp) but will add 1 tsp.

Use Brightwell Potassion-P use 150g to raise levels to 425.

Here are the results of the last ICP test.
