JBNY's 270 Ver2.0

I had a few issues with the tank recently. First I have been monitoring my Alk every day or two and about two weeks ago, I noticed that the alk was trending down so I just upped my Ca reactor a little to compensate, next day it looked good, but then it started to go down again so I made another adjustment but still next day it was down again. So at that point I pulled out a different test kit (I had been using the Hanna Digital Alk kit), my trusty Salifert. The Salifert Alk kit measured 9.3 dKh, much higher than the 6.5 the Hanna was telling me! So then I use the calibration fluid that is included in the Salifert on both the Salifert and the Hanna. The Salifert is spot on, the Hanna is way off. At this point I shut off the reactor for afew days and go with the Salifert as the correct reading. But the damage was done and I burned a few frags, including the pearlberry and a nice Red Dragon frag that I had. So I lost them.

Reading up on the Hanna accuracy later I found out that the titration fluid becomes less accurate as you near the end of the bottle, my bottle was almost done. I had another unopened titration bottle that I bought, so I pulled that out and the numbers then matched up against the Salifert exactly. Now I am a little leery of using the Hanna knowing that it can drift drastically at some point.

I had exactly the same thing happen last week. The tell tale sign that the reagent is off is floating residue in the reagent. I normally come in at 130, last week the egg showed 115 so I opened a new bottle and got 130.

That's a yummy selection of frags Joe, i can see a lot of singed corallite lips - 9.5 is my ignition point for the tips to start burning.
Glad you caught the error before it got out of control mate :)

Same thing happened to me recently as well. I artificially created an alk spike in my tank because of my Hanna checker, I even created a thread in the Chem forum lol. I'm thinking this also occurred in the past and went undiagnosed. Glad I learned of this possibility/reality so this likely won't blindside me again.

Looking good Joe! Some nice pieces there:)

Nice looking frags. Like sahin, I like the yellow and the red one.
I see a couple plugs in there.. How do you prep your frags before putting them in the reef?
Dips, pest removal, inspections etc...

Great looking pieces! I especially like 3, 5, and 6.

Thanks I've had 3 & 6 for a few months but 5 is pretty new, just a few weeks old but it is starting to color up nice.

Thanks I am making sure I pay more attention to the reagent in the future.

Very nice! I especially like no 3 and the Red Planet looking one.

Thanks Sahin, 3 is a wild coral I have had for a while. The other is the Red Planet, I think it's not getting enough light where it is so it has some green in it, but in all honesty I think I like the contrast the green brings.

Thanks Andrew, Yeah those are recovering tips from the alk burn last month. Everything looks to be recovering it's just when the corals are so small it's real easy to lose one with a little error like that.

Thanks these are some real good pieces I have been picking up lately, I am very hapey with them. Yeah we have to watch those hanna alk testers. :(

Great looking frags, always fun to watch them grow up!

Thanks I think they are getting ready to start growing, all the frags seem to be doing better lately.

Those two are some sweet looking guys for sure. The red one is the red planet, I was told it gets green when it is not in real high light.

So all the frags are coming from known sources that feel they are pest free, even so I dip them and inspect. I use Bayer as the dip and do 25ml to 500ml of tank water. put the frag in a little cup and cover with the solution for about 15 minutes then rinse with tank water and swish them around in two separate containers of clean tank water and then give them another rinse just to make sure all the Bayer is off. then I put them in the frag tank for a few days and make sure they look good before moving them to the display tank.

Here are two more I forgot to post

Beauty Frags Joe!

The red planet actually has a lovely contrast!

This week I start to repopulate my Reef with SPS. We'll see how it goes.

As the search for "near zero total 'nitrate and phosphate I always thought different.
Even at the time I ran Zeovit Full l've never run behind extremely low parameters, despite the system provide these results with ease.
Honestly never pleased me extremely pastel colors of many SPS, particularly felt kind of look like plastic fruit. Nothing against people who appreciate the corals in this tone, please.

So I always kept a heavy food and many foods for the corals so that my levels of nitrate and phosphate kept at around 1.2 to 2 and 0.07 to 0.5 respectively.

I sincerely believe that the answer of some friends as the deeper colors of my SPS in Zeovit system was answered by this procedure.
I hope to be understood, because my English must be terrible.

A hug!

Wow, looking great Joe. I can't wait to get back in the game myself.

Thanks Greg! Yes, you need to get a tank going! The hobby is fun just talking about it, but much more enjoyable when you have a tank running.

Nice looking frags are you getting them from online or from local shop

Thanks, the wild ones are coming from local, Kevin over at Pet Warehouse in Copiague gets some really great acros.

Thank you. I've never starved my tank to keep low parameters, as such even when having very low test results for N and P I was still able to get good coloration, not pale at all. This is the first time I have actively worked to have some Nitrate and Phosphates in the tank. I agree with you, and hope that coloration will be better and maintenance on the tank will be easier.

No worries Joe! I have a AGE being built as we speak. My return is imminent!

That is great news! Will you be able to take advantage of Reef-a-palooza to stock up the new tank? I'm holding out till then for more coral, perhaps Ill meet you there:)

Unfortunately my tank will be on display at the show so I won't be able to stock up there. I'll be running all the raffles and making all the announcements so look me up.

A few shots of the tank.

FTS. Even with lots of little corals in the tank it still looks like there is nothing there but rock!

That rock work really makes the tank, it looks massive and if I had to guess I'd say this was at least a 750 gallon tank. :D
