Jebo 520 skimmer thread.

LOL, yeah. I have never been this sore in my life. We got the snowmobile out and I was soaked! But I still rode for the rest of the day. So much fun! Paying for it now though.

I'm no good at doing mod's.
What do you guys think of the 520's on ebay, that included the pump ( $40 shipping )? Am I going to be happy with it out of the box?

The PS75 is about $50 shipped.
I'm setting up a 55gal with a 29gal sump ( holding about 24gals water ). Will this work? Will 2 of them work twice as well?

I am about to set up my first reef so I am gathering knowledge right now. Some things are a little confusing still. The skimmer that started this thread seems similar to this oneââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦

http://www.aquatraders.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=245

I have been and still am an FW African guy so the reef world is all new to me. I will be setting up a 30 gal long with a 30 gal tall as ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œfugeââ"šÂ¬Ã‚. A friend is telling me a skimmer is a must. Anywayââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦this seems good deal. Rated for 75 gallons and I should have a total that I would think is something less than the total volume of the two tanks right?

Help a rookie out please.

From what I read that skimmer would be ok for you. It won't be the greatest but certainly better than a Remora, Seaclone or Prizm. Stocking levels are much more important than with the FW tanks. FWIW, I kept cichlid tanks for years and loved them but you will be glad you took the leap and went SW. Just take your time and READ ! ! !

So whats the lastest info on modding the 520? The first few pages, people were changing things around. Someone have a step by step mod page?

aqua traders seem to have incomplete 520s for sale the only issue is they have no riser tube in the collection cup. any body have any diameter dimensions and lenth of that piece. so i can try to see if i can find that piece. try to save some money over that $100 ebay price tag (w/shipping). $100 is not bad if i can use the pump that comes with it for something.

heres an idea for you guys who are using what may be over size pumps. you can make your skimmer alot more ajustable (increse dwell time...) by putting a reostat on your pump. this is the best way to controll folw of any pump. it actualy slows down the pump. witch =less noise, less electricity, less wear on pump, less hardware (vavles), you can buy a bigger pump and over time as your pump looses effecence you can turn it up. pumps last longer. this applys to all pumps this is a real good for you guys who run high amp pool pumps

just came from ebay looks like the Octopus NW-200 is the complete skimmer at $180. looks more like the ASM 7.5 inches dia.
+$25/50 shipping to the US/Canada which for E-Bay items may not be that terrible.

Not to knock this setup but this is getting close to a Coralife SuperSkimmer NW 220 at what $180 (smaller by likley better support) and the ASM G3 at say $243. The real problem is when you compare to say our 520's at $30, plus your favorite NW&pump from PremiumAquatics.com and of course Aquatraders.com:

GEN-X2400 $50
635 GPH
7.5ft maxmum lift
40 Watts

GEN-X4100 $71
1085 GPH
9.2ft maximum lift
70W

OR 2700 $60
900 GPH
2.6 M
38W

Add say $10 at most for some misc. plumbbing supplies and if your in my case looking for two small skimmers your at only $180 plus shipping blood sweat and tears.... ;)

according to aquatrader today they said 520 are a thing of the past. so ebay at $70 plus $40 shippng is then a pump Octopus NW-200 looks like the better deal.

what do you mean you looking for two small skimmers.

if all else is the same bigger is allways better when it come to skimmers. vollume = dwell time. and vollume = less turbulance at collection cups= better skimmate. yes no?

At $70 plus $40 shippng for a 520 that you would still need to do some plumbing work for, I would go with the Octopus NW 200 too.

For what it's worth someone from Aquatraders assured me they have one last shipment due right about now. I'll follow up with them on the phone again and let you know.

On the two skimmer subject, I'm not an expert but I think something like an ASM G3 is a pretty "correct" and efficiently sized skimmer. I think cleaning skimmers on alternate schedules would help the tank, I'm a fan of redundancy, and I have height limitations.
