Jessica's sump build

Ok, found on MarineDepot the required footprint for the skimmer is 6.25" x 5.5". A 20 High is 24" long.

So, skimmer compartment 8" (total will be 8"x12" giving some working space), Four baffles (under/over/under/over) with a 1.5" spacing and 1/4" glass takes another 5.5", leaving 10.5 for the return chamber.

The first "over" baffle determines the water depth in the skimmer compartment (assuming the whole sump isn't full beyond that point of course. A 20H is 16" high, so going half for a depth of 8" in the skimmer compartment leaves a minumum of an additional 10 gallons of space for any backflow (more, because the water level in the return compartment will be lower).

The last baffle (over) wont actually accomplish much, except without it, as your water level drops, the single area with downward movement that takes out most bubbles could become a waterfall and create more. Since the total flow wont be too high, you could also space them closer to add more, or give up more space in the skimmer or return areas.

I think that's where I'd go with it. Is so many other options for what does such a simple thing, there are lots of decisions though :)

Jessica, were you planning any sort of auto-topoff? With that, you could get away with making the return area as small as possible to make more room for other gadgets. Without auto-topoff, the smaller your return compartment the quicker it will run dry. Any evaporated water reduces the level in only that compartment.
